I thought lock tite was supposed to fix it?
But also, I saw one thread where the nut dropped, got chewed up in the gears (therefore tearing up the gears), and ended up busting the case.
Although the ZF Trans isn't my favorite either, I would take it over the dodge trans, even the 6 speed shifts like crap IMO.

The NV 4500 isn't bad, much better than that 360 in my opinion, as for automatics, the 727 torque flight will stand up to the cummins' torque, it's a relic of the dodge big block muscle car era, with engines such as the 426 hemi and 440 six pack bolted to it. The four speed automatics are pretty flimsy. Your '89 truck has larger injectors than the later 1st gen cummins which is a plus for making power, turning up the fuel screw will gain some horses at no cost aside from extra fuel use

79jasper I wonder how that could happen on a nv4500 because the 5th gear slides on the output shaft as an after the fact thing. All the other gears are inside the case. The 5th gear and the nut that holds it in place are captured on the shaft. They either encounter the speedo drive and drive shaft /tail shaft housing on a 2wd or tail shaft housing and then transfer case on a 4wd. Either way it's captured. Not saying it didn't happen but stranger things have happened.

Not sure, as I haven't had one opened.
Just a thread I read.
May not have even been close to the real cause. Lol
We all know how that goes.
I might see if I can find it, just to refresh my memory.

Is there an easy way to identify an NV4500 to a "360"

I tought that only the NV4500 was behind the cummins !

The first gen trucks all came with g360's. If its truly an nv4500 someone swapped it in.
