Hi all ,
first thread ...
I`m new into diesels ...been building gas engines for 35 years and discovered the pleasure of diesels lately

I`m into a cummins 12V project for a home made pick up based camper

could I get the specs of both gens ( 1st & 2nd )
fuel pump etc...
tried to find a sticky on this ...

can an intercooler addded to the first gen to get better HP ?

some say rotary pump is better for economy ....
I`m lookin at around 300 hp and 550 ft/pds torque

need some beginners advices ,

thanks

Dan ,

I would do 1st gen, just to stay away from the 503 block.
That power level is pretty doable with bigger injectors.
Yes, you can intercool any turbo engine for better efficiency and power.
P - pump is what you want.

thanks a lot for the reply ,

I could get a 1989 ram 2500 with NV4500 5 speed at real 107,000 milles
for $1000.00
the cab is quite rusted but the engine + tranny + diff run great ....

old man of 76 years old who owned it since new ....took great care of it !

does it have the "P" pump as you mention !

does that 1st gen be suited up for 2nd gen equivalent ( interccooled form factory )

Yeah, I think you can just swap the stuff over.
IIRC, the p pump would be in the box vans and stuff.

Here's what I know, the first gen 12 valve is rated to produce 160 horse@2400 rpm and 400 foot pounds torque @1750 rpm, bore and stroke is 4.00X4.72" 1989 - 1993 got the Bosch rotary pump, 1994 - 1998.5 got the p pump. I believe an intercooler was introduced in '91. This is all from memory, so I might be wrong. Hope it helps

That sounds right.
I'm really not a dodge fan, so I don't keep up with all the info.
Just little bits I've read here and there to help out a buddy.

Yep the engine in question is a rotary pump. You can reach the goals you have set with that setup but I would recommend adding the intercooler to keep the heat down so you have more usable power levels. You can do the fuel pin and injectors to get to the power levels you want. What rear gear do you have in this rig. Because the cummins is low rpm engine. They typically shutdown at around 2200 rpm so getting a spring kit for the injection pump is almost a must in my opinion. The p pumps get the best fuel economy out all of them but the rotary pump is far behind and for the added cost of finding a p pump that hasn't been modified and ragged on I would just stick with the rotary set up.

this is still a project .....

I have no vehicle yet .....
This is why I ask infos before i do any move .....

I would definitely install an intercooler and better turbo + injectors to get the maximum out of it ( performance/economy )

I wanted to know if this Ram pickup was a good start ....

Having a complete donor is always nice and 1k is a good deal. Unless its been swapped in, the truck should have a get rag 360 transmission. Good transmission if driven nice. I personally like the ve pumps as they are stupid easy to get more power.

It's the Getrag 360, also known as "get a rag" 360 because they aren't strong enough to handle 359 cubic inches let alone 360, and end up leaking before they break.

I was always told to get a manual tranny cummins because the auto is too weak !
so The Nv4500 aint stout enough for the cummins 5.9 ???

The nv4500 is a decent trans the big problem with them is the 5th gear nut backs off and once it starts there isn't much you can do to keep it on. Reason is the splines are a slip fit so they rattle around a little and it will back off even the upgraded nut. The true fix is to get a new shaft with a new gear then it will be good for many many miles. Now when the nut does fall off the transmission will still work in 4 gears just 5th does nothing so it won't leave you stranded by any means. You can get home. Now having rebuilt one I can tell you I wouldn't wait for too many miles to get it fixed because that nut sets up the back lash for the shaft. So while it will take probably thousands of miles to real damage but do you want to take that chance. I tried welding it once but that worked for a while then the shaft broke. It destroyed the temper of the metal but then again I was a little drunk when I welded mine. There was a challenge issued that I couldn't weld it and we all know the rest of that story
