this is one of those things that i learned on.
with my gasser background, when you develop a rod knock there is no mistaking it for a top end issue. you can clearly hear the rod knock.
what i was hearing was the piston slapping the head ever so lightly.
ive had lazy lifters, ive had vales hitting the pistons, and ive had fuel knock...
now i have had the pleasure if the sweet sound of the head and piston duet.

it sucks, but i knew the days were numbered going into it.

im gonna throw my spare block in and get it along until i can build the engine i wanted in this thing.

its just another machine.....

Hope the heat is kinder to you guys. It was 116 here in PHX today. I would not want to be bent over the motor today. I've welded in the summer heat before and you forget how much you sweat until you unplug your welder with sweat dripping and the 240v reminds you water and electricity do not mix.

only high 90's out here, but work has kept me in my metal shop...
i was supposed to get up early this morning and work on it before work,
but 0600 came too quick, and lastnight i was obliterated.
****** monday.
lets just say, the rod busting, was the highlight of my day.
i filled the major order i needed to get out this month, and another 12 will clear up all the little stuff,
and i can spend the rest of the month slammin on it...

my engine should be done by the end of this week.
so i may just let it sit until i build the new engine.
im still having a unarmed mind battle with myself.
:idiot:

So I was wrong about a spun rod bearing.
I’m curious to see the clearance on this rod!!

Gonna slap the spare IDIT I have in it.

WOW! I am surprised you didn't hole the side of the block much more than you did!

So, wait... it just snapped the rod in half? And both ends are fine?
That sounds exactly like the rebuilt motor I had in my '88 - ran fine for a while, developed a small tick... shut her down one evening after 100-200 miles of driving, fired her up the next morning and... really rough, doesn't sound right. Rev it a little and boom!

In my case, the rod snapped clean through just below the small end. Both bearings were tight and moved freely on a layer of oil... even a year and a half later when I finally tore into it.

These engines stop in FOUR specific places. Cylinders 1 & 4 2 & 5 7 & 6 3 & 8 any pair goes to TDC when you shut down, that's why the engine stops so abruptly, there is a tremendous load on the two rods of the two cylinders that stop on TDC, they have to stop the rotation of the crank. That's possibly why the rod broke on shut down.

That's something I've never really thought about. Good thinking! Those are the pairs that are on the compression cycle at the same time then? And out of curiosity is that different than any other diesel or gasser V8? (Not the specific cyls but having compression pairs vs more staggered)

Only one cylinder in the pair will be under compression, the other one will be on the exhaust stroke. As for load, it would be way less when stopping as there is no ignition on the last compression stroke, now on start up I could see a high load as the fist ignition pulse is going to try and spin the crank up to speed.

Over on the "other site" about 11 years ago a member purchased a logger f350 from a oil pipe line company. Truck ahd been sitting because of a knock.Guy ran the engine and heard the knock.Purchased it for a good price. Drove it up on a trailer. got home and drove it off trailer. Tried to drive it to garage and it locked up. No oil on ground but opening up engine showed a broken rod that had finally jammed the block and stopped the crank from turning 360 degrees. So yes... These engines can run badly out of balance on 7 cylinders.

Fuel system and shiny parts all swapped over.
Had enough time to stab the engine, clean the shop, and roll her in for the final touches

Ok I'll show my ignorance...you've said it a few times, what is "stab the engine"?

Nice work!
