took the lady out for a dinner and sunset date tonight, enjoying the clear and auburn skys.
fired her up after we were done and "tickticktick"
the speed varied with RPM.

anyone wanna guess what my issue is?

my bet is a rocker came loose!

ill pull the valve covers tomorrow.

definitely a top end tick thank god.

not to shabby for a "back up engine"
its lasted almost 3 years.

Before you pull anything apart crack each injector line and see if the sound goes away, probably not your issue but eliminate the easy things first

got the 68 done,
did some work on the 52.
and now ive got the ranchero in to wire up lights and get it road worthy for tonight.
Nite of the Hotrods is tonight!

this is definitely a valve train noise, not a fuel knock.

but i did notice that its much louder in neutral
without a load on it, that baffled me.
ill dig into it today if i have time.
tomorrow most likely.

Step 1,
Fired it up to isolate the tick.
Lots and lots of smoke this morning!
Unburnt fuel.
Still took the valve covers off and hooked up the coolant pressure tester.
Got some “honey-do’s to do this mornin.
I’ll grab my remote starter button and get back out there soon.

Now it’s lookin like it may be an injector.
Or worse. Glow plug tip in a cylinder??
Never had that much smoke on a cold start. Ambient temp is 82

Coolant system holding steady

Pulled plugs, #3 was pretty wet.
But all intact.
No broken tips
Pulled #1&3 injector, both popped right around 1850.
Both dry when pulled.
(I need a better gauge)
Spray pattern looked ok too
So here I sit scratching my head.

It’s high noon and getting hot.
Gonna relocate to the garage and work on a Pontiac until this evening.

Then I’ll do a leak down test on it

I think I would still be leaning towards a injector.

Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk

it wasnt smoking at all when the tick started.
ill pull the rest of the injectors and pop test them later.
then a leak down test.
i did crank it over with the plugs out, and put my finger over the hole (redneck comp test)
all 8 felt good, and relatively close to each other.
know more tonight...

if i fail to find the cause, im pullin the sob and throwin in my spare turbo block.
figures this **** happens a month away from my latest build being done....
i woulda just slapped the rebuild in here instead of the chero,....

need the truck for aug 3rd. taking the woman "tramping" :D
(truck camping) *****

All I can say is it sounds like my symptoms on my '93 motor. Still don't know quite what the cause is, but I just went with MMO and it went from "motor sounds like it's ready to throw a rod" to "eh, it ticks and sounds horrible".... Still does decent. I'm still running it as I have for the last few thousand miles.
I, too, pulled the valve covers and found... nothing wrong.

edit:
One interesting thing with my tick is that on first start up, it knocks badly for about 10 seconds, then quiets down(with oil pressure?). No excessive smoke on my end.
