I am aware that this section of the forum has been dead for around 4 years, but alas, this is the proper place to post about these cars

Yesterday I went out to Grand Island, NE and picked up this car…

This isn’t the best picture, but given that the trip took all day, I didn’t have much time to be taking pictures.

The car is a 1966 according to the data plate and title, but the fact that it has the parking lights on the top of the front fenders, and the turn signals below the headlights would suggest that it is either a 1965.5 or very early 1966, if such parts are indeed original. Given that the range matches, 1966 makes the most sense, and many of the parts on this car are original.

Edited to add: After further research, this car is definitely a very early ‘66, as it is a 190Dc rather than a 200D, which would have been the model from mid ‘66 through ‘68. That and the parking lights on top of the fenders with the turn signals once again put it at 1965.5 or early 1966; since the data plate and title claim it is a ‘66, that narrows it down further.

The 5 digit odometer reads 40k, given the condition, I would think it is really at 140k.

It has a 4 speed column shifted manual, which definitely needs some new bushings in the linkage. It goes into each gear smoothly, so I’ll just start with bushings.

The engine is an OM621.940 model, 54ish horsepower new. It runs very well, and smokes like it’s on fire, but clears up when you put a load on it.

I did do a quick test to see if the governor on the back of the injection pump holds a vacuum, it does not. According to the internet, that can cause it to smoke at idle and still run great, so I’ll tear into that next chance I get.

The glow plugs are the original low voltage system, I ordered the 12V plugs and have done the research on how to convert the wiring. Hopefully that will reduce the literal 10 minute glow time to around 10 seconds.

I’m going to change the filters once the new ones arrive, and perform a valve adjustment. I might also replace the injectors, they are rather inexpensive.

I need to clean the rheostat for the instrument cluster lights, it’s a little iffy.

The ivory steering wheel is cracked…

The car has very little rust, pretty much all surface rust where tiny bits of paint got knocked off.

I’ll update this thread as I work on the car.

I ordered some parts…

New glow plugs, as stated in my original post.

New diaphragm for the injection pump governor.

New glass for the drivers side mirror.

New valve cover gasket, as I will need to adjust valve lash.

New timing chain, in case the old one is out of spec. I don’t expect it to be, but now I should be prepared.

New chain guides.

New bushings for the transmission shift linkage, in hopes of making the column shifter feel less vague during gear shifts.

After I go through this and hopefully get it to stop smoking and shift a little better, my next step will be to bring the cooling system up to a usable level, with new radiator, thermostat, and hoses, and possibly a water pump rebuild kit. Many things on this old car can be rebuilt seemingly easily and simply.

That looks like it would be perfect for a 'Cold War' spy movie... from the 'fifties and early 'sixties...

Start looking around for some 'period dress' suits and put some mean-looking dummies in the back and passenger seat.

Ya gotta paint it a dark color...and get some friends together and brain out a plot and dialogue.

Jus' sayin'...

Worked on it most of the day, drove it down to the farm with that massive trunk filled with tools, parked it in a climate controlled shed. A good day to be in one of those, given the 60 mph north wind, and snow… yuck.

Changed the cartridge fuel filter, and cleaned the screen fuel filter. Replaced an O ring on the feed pump that was leaking.

Got all the window regulators working properly, now the windows go up and stay up, and go down smoothly.

There was only one loose bushing, where the shift lever goes into the column. Very easy to replace, now it shifts wonderfully. Not vague at all, and butter smooth.

Also changed the valve cover gasket, and inspected the valve train and timing chain. Everything looks great under there, I still need to adjust the valves though.

V belts look a bit rough, and are noisy. I need to replace them.

Vacuum diaphragm is supposed to arrive this week, I need to keep looking through service manuals and figure out exactly what that process entails. It looks pretty complicated.

Glow plugs are also supposed to arrive this week.

I ordered motor mounts. The ones in the car are in horrible shape.

That thing actually drives great.

Only leaked three drops of oil over the course of a week. The new valve cover gasket should help.

That car is very strange to my American mind. The vacuum controlled injection pump is weird. It actually has a throttle blade that creates vacuum in the intake manifold, like a gas engine, but it opens up enough that it only makes vacuum at idle, then the vacuum pump takes over.

Thinking back to when I was in 1970's Manhiem.
The cars had "parking lamps" for the tiny narrow streets of the residential area's the directional lever had a hot lead to light up the corner of the car at night so it didn't get hit.
You would put the turn signal on and it would illuminate a tiny filament.

I like that. My aunt had a green Mercedes of that vintage, back when they were new. I have a soft spot in my head for them, but haven't found one of that era yet. Probably just as well, I have way too many projects as it is.

Congratulations on a really nice find!

Well, I tackled the governor today.

The original diaphragm was in many many pieces, cracks and chunks missing.

Not a very simple system, but easy enough to work on.

I got the new diaphragm installed and fired it up. Smoke was gone, but loped very badly and would die if you didn’t keep your foot on the throttle pedal a little bit.

After much confusion and searching through the service manual, I found that the linkage from the air throttle blade to the injection pump was out of adjustment. Got it turned to the proper length and adjusted the idle speed, now it runs silky smooth and no smoke.

Waiting on new tires and radiator to get here now. Then the original radiator will be sent to California to be restored by the Brassworks.

New tires were installed last weekend, and I installed the new radiator yesterday. Runs even smoother down the road, and much cooler at a constant 180*.

This car now starts, runs, drives and stops very well.

Alternator belt has been squeaking after startup occasionally, it just needs tightened.

Otherwise, no trouble at all. I’ve been driving it around, fairly often.

The trunk has so much room, I have most of my service truck in there… heheheheh…
