1985 6.9 with a zf5 will work with any years up to 97? Just make sure the zf is 4x4 if it's going into a 4x4 truck?
Yes.
1985 6.9 with original c6 can go into any 4x2 up to 1994 powerstroke because it's not ECM reliant, right?
I'm pretty sure that the answer is yes. IF it's a diesel truck AND you use the wiring from the truck. Any IDI will use any year of IDI wiring, accessories, and etc.
1985 6.9 with original c6 ... what route would any of you with experience take? Keep together, divide, other thoughts?
I see no reason to keep them together. I think that the C6 is a wonderful transmission behind a gas engine. They work fine behind a IDI as long as you keep the highway speed down to around 55 or so. They start to lose their luster when you try to drive faster than that. Not that it can't be done, it's just not as pleasant as a transmission with overdrive.
there's a member on here that's really "chill" and lives in New York State.....
Are we talking about a man here?
"I wouldn't live in Florida, there's too many New Yorkers there".....and he's right! Everyone wants to live in my wonderful cheap poor NW Florida, but they want to bring their culture and their prius' and Tesla's........ and they ..... I'll stop.....I'll be a good boy........
That's one thing that I think is GREAT about living in a flyover state. Those types don't usually want to live here.

@Clb That depends, if it was a 460 truck then it can be modified to work on the diesel.

If it was a small block truck then it's not gonna work!

James
Curious, how are they different? I swapped 1990 460 to idi, and it was almost plug n play. Have not tried a small block yet.

This doesn't have a comparison with the diesel bellhousing but it does show how much difference there is between the BB and SB.

The top 2 are the same on the diesel, it's the locator pins that are off by just a little bit.

Speaking of which, I've got a 460 E4OD in a 93/94 motorhome I'll part with....I guess I should put it in marketplace for some ambitious automatic guy.

At one point I had a 4 spd 460 bell (hydraulic), a 460 e40d, a 460 zf, and an idi bell to compare. The 460zf bell was the only one that the drilling mod would work on.

Thanks fellas...
I'm in florida and run trees twice weekly to Charleston SC... I think all the NE movers are heading there as Fl is getting too crowded. Same infrastructure and political problems we started to realize decades ago. Feel for them. A flyover state is nice... but love the Ocean. Hate to sound misanthropic but people... you know.
At least here's not lower NY yet.
Heck, I think West Palm Beach is actually becoming Wall Street South. Really.
I digress. Controls and AC are a consideration. Would like to keep them running as close to stock as possible. Not in a hurry, so can wait for a good truck candidate.
You guys and this forum is the best...
