Hey Guys,
I was afraid I might run into something like this, but here goes:
I am swapping a zf5 into my 87 F250, with a 7.3 and a pre-sidewinder banks nonwastegated turbo, and now that Ive got my tranny bolted on and crossmember modified to fit it, I can see now that the up pipe for the turbo that fit the T19 is not going to clear the ZF5.

What can I do about this? I know there were two different pedestals, but I thought they were for auto and manual. Does the kit for the ZF5 use the manual pedestal but a different up pipe? Is there anyone still making pipes for these?

Check @IDIoit
He was building custom up pipes awhile ago.
There were banks mfg. Up pipes, and I believe something about the powerstroke up pipe with a modification done to accommodate...

well, the problem with that is, thats only half the problem. the other half is that even just the flared end of the uppipe with the flange on it doesnt fit between the tranny and tunnel, even with the crossmember out and the trans at full droop.

Things can be done, made to make it work. This is a factor 093 style collector, with a custom bellowed up-pipe.

Some of the old kits just wont work with the zf. I have been able to make some work, but in the end wasnt worth the work.
Those old turbos are better than no turbo, but an 093/factory kit works better in most every way.

I think what happened is that the guy I bought the kit from didnt know what it was, and it turns out this was the kit for the automatic trannies all along, and it just so happened to barely fit around the T19, so I didnt ask any questions at the time. Anyways, I just ordered a pile of mandrel bent 2.5" tubing, and my 2x4 aided drafting indicates that I can fit a tube through without executing the frieburger smash if I cut a chunk of tunnel out.

will it be perfect? absolutely not, and would a stock, ats, hypermax, or sidewinder be a better turbo? yes. But this is the one I already have, and Im pretty pleased with the 6-8 psi I can wring out of it. I am not a greedy man, but Im thinking that between swapping the square banks airbox to a 6637, and having an overdrive gear to load up the engine a little more, I should be even more pleased with the old banks.

As I recall, the up pipe for the auto trans comes in from the driver's side and the up pipe for the manual trans comes in from the passenger's side.

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but here's the Banks kit with E4OD on my E350. It might be a good visual aid for the turbo kit setup when it's actually in use. You don't get this wide open view on pickups.

Well, since now I know that A: I have the wrong pedestal, and B: buying the right pedestal and all new Y pipe/uppipe would probably put me back between $600 and $1200, not to mention time wasted trying to find them, Ive gone ahead with my plan to make a custom up pipe and modify the firewall to fit it.

I could have made the hole in the tunnel smaller, but I want to be able to get the up pipe in and out without dropping the trans crossmember in the future, so here it is. Once the pipe is all welded up, Ill make a kind of half moon arched panel to cover up the hole, then dynamat overtop of that to help insulate from the heat.

I got the new uppipe made and built a box around the hole in the tunnel for clearance, and got it all installed and ready to go. I put a V-band between the uppipe and ypipe to replace that accursed slipjoint. Unless this thing leaks, I hope to never touch it again, God willing.
