It is around me too. The prices vary so much from town to town, I don't pay a lot of attention. I kind of do the same thing when I fill up too. I need it so I just pay for it. The good news is that it's almost motorcycle weather around here.

AZ is so weird about diesel. I think I mentioned that in that other thread about fuel taxes. There is a station I like to use that has 2 "high flow" lanes (big nozzles) that semis can use (has nozzles on both sides), and one for regular flow with only a driver's side, small nozzle. The main fuel price sign shows $2.879 right now but then off to the side is a flip board number type of sign that says something like "light duty" price is $2.799.

My RV falls under that lighter duty so I can get the price. But, it's a minor pain. You have to go inside, leave a card or something of "value" they say, so they can start the pump before you actually pay, then you go pump your fuel, then go back inside and pay how you want (cash or card), but also you have to provide your license plate number, print your name and sign your name in their notebook to get the cheaper price. I have all the time in the world so I go through the hassle.

I filled both tanks today, just over 11.5gal in each, 23.04gal total, and the "discount" between the heavy taxed rate and light rate was $1.84. Yeah it's a pain, but that pays for over half a gallon. At 8mpg, it's worth he hassle to me. Plus I get another 2% cash back on fuel too, so that's another ~$1.30 I'll get back on the credit card. So between the "discount" and the 2%, I got a "free" gallon on this fill-up.

I do think that it would be more worth it for you than for most of the rest of us. My best example is when I go to the closest Wal-Mart. I leave and head back north. The first town is 21 miles north. A couple of weeks ago, fuel was $2.89/gallon there. Another 13 miles north, in the next town, it was $2.69/gallon. I can't keep up with the price differences in all of the different towns so I don't even try.

Haha I drive a class B truck around for my job and there are days that I've seen a full dollar difference on the same day in the same county, but maybe 40-50 miles apart. And it wasn't some fluke either, it was 80 cents for multiple other stations. Crazy!

@Cubey we have a thing here where you go inside go get 10 cents off by paying cash, because apparently every station in the state is giving the credit card companies the finger, which I applaud. But it drives me bonkers to get out, mask up, find cash, fill up and then go back for the change... still, it's worth the 3 extra minutes to do it usually.

Arco is annoying as hell.. for cards they only accept as debit AND they charge you a fee. I drove away from one without buying any fuel there. I fueled up elsewhere later on since there were no savings to be had there with a fee and no 2% back on credit card for fuel.

Ours didn't jump quite that fast. It was around $2.25 back in January and now is all around $2.65+. Of course I haven't fueled up for a week and a half. I don't know what the price is. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I filled up @ 2.80 today. Literally right across the street it was 3.10.

Ive seen that type of thing before. It usually doesn't stay at the cheaper price for long when that happens.

It depends. I have seen it stay. Each station owner sets their own markup. Maybe one station brand is somehow seen as better than the other... Ie: Shell vs Arco. Shell may be priced higher because the owner feels it's worth it.

Here's the fuel price report from today's trip. The first picture is at Cameron's corner in Hill City, KS. Cubey knows that this is the first town south of where my garage is at. The next one is from Plainville, KS which is about 35 miles south, southwest of Hill City and 20 or 25 miles north of Wal-Mart. I didn't pay much attention to the prices in hays, KS where Wal-Mart is located (at it's the closest one to me). The last one, after dark, is on the way back home in Stockton, KS which is 15 or so miles north of Plainville. I guess the prices aren't varying much right now.

If it's just a few pennies, I just pick the one that's easiest in/out and closest/right along my route. I won't go out of my way to get cheaper fuel because it doesn't make any sense, unless it's like 30 cents difference AND I can work that into my route. If a higher priced station is on the RH side vs one on the LH side that's a few cents less, I'll take the RH side one. Especially pulling the little cargo trailer, I try to plan ahead for ones that won't be awful to get in/out.

I'd do the same thing. It just so happened that I took this route today. Originally, I wasn't going to go through Hill City, but I had to grab something from my garage first.
