Quick question. I could go out and measure this but I am at work with no tools. Anyone know the diameter of hose that connects from the turbo to the intake on a Banks 1st gen system. I am thinking its 2". I want to go ahead and order one now.

Truck is not making much boost (3-4psi max). I can hear the turbo spooling pretty well. Any exhaust leaks I have are very minor and the turbo was just rebuilt by Russ with an upgraded wheel. From talking to others it sounds like I should be making at least 10psi. My silicone hose that connects to the turbo is looking like it's seen better days so i'm going to replace it. I also need to check the CDR block off. I assume there is an o-ring that seals there?

It’s 2”

Replaced that and also noticed the diesel shop I had it at replaced my intake hat gasket with an O-Ring that squished out when tightened down.

Replaced that with a normal gasket I had (previously bought a 3-pack)

Fingers crossed.

Yes. It doesn't take much of a leak to really drop your boost PSI. Between the slight exhaust leaks and the turbo to intake hose that's in questionable condition, I think you should feel lucky that you're making that much boost. Fix or replace these issues and I'll bet you boost will be right up where it should be.

You posted as I was typing. That would be a bad thing for building boost too.

Not much of a change if any. Still only getting 3-4 psi pretty much wide open around 2500 rpm.

On the intake side the CDR blockoff I still have not checked.

Since i’ve had the truck, have pulled apart the exhaust connections at the manifolds and re-torqued them. Also done the slip joint with a new clamp and copper silicone sealant. No visual leaks there. I think I hear a very minor exhaust leak coming from somewhere. I haven’t been able to get at the connection behind the turbo yet. A mirror shows no soot around that connection, but it’s the only one I have not resealed.

For those of you who have this setup, is the connection accessible from below the truck with some combination of socket extensions, or is the transmission in the way? I’d like to at least bust the nuts loose and re-torque them

There's actually two connections here. One between the turbo and the turbo mount, one between the up pipe and the turbo mount. There is a gasket between the turbo and the turbo mount. You should be able to get to the up pipe nuts from down below.

I crawled under the truck this morning with a can of Free All to start soaking the up pipe nuts. This is the only connection I haven't reset/resealed and I believe I hear a minor exhaust leak coming from it. Both of my connections at the exhaust manifolds were leaking when I got the truck so its probably expected that this one is leaking too (same style flange)

I couldn't even see them to soak them in penetrating oil. Going to crawl back under there this afternoon but I think I am going to have to pull the turbo off to get at them from the top of the engine. I may end up having to pull the turbo mount itself and the up-pipe out from above if that can be done. I'm not sure if I will have room to get an impact in there to bust those nuts loose. i definitely don't have room for a breaker bar.

What sucks is I had a transmission shop do the flywheel for me and I asked them to bust those nuts loose and reseal that connection while the transmission was out. They didnt do it because they thought they might be stuck, and had the truck all back together before telling me. I would have told them to go for it even if it meant a few extra hours labor replacing studs.

Some time with a mirror indicated no soot around the up/pipe to turbo bracket. I would have to remove the turbo and the up-pipe bracket to get to that joint, probably a 3-4 hour job.

I did see some soot at the two manifold to up-pipe connections. Previously I had busted those loose and re-torqued them and it seemed to shore up most of the leaking. But I remembered that since I did that, a transmission shop pulled those off and reinstalled them, and i'm not sure how careful they were. Yesterday I took them off and glommed on some of the permatex ultra copper sealant, then reinstalled and re-torqued, being careful to get even clamping pressure on the flange. Just waiting for the sealant to dry now, should take it out for a spin in a few hours (fingers crossed).

Well no luck. I still think I hear an exhaust leak from inside the cab so that turbo is going to have to come off.

I put an inspection camera down to the turbo up pipe connection at the banks turbo mount flange. Could only see one side but it was clean, no soot.

The gasket around the turbo is new and no soot.

Replaced the CDR blockoff Oring today, no change.

It’s pretty tough to visualize the whole spaghetti piping layout, but here’s the whole kit assembled as Jeremy sent me a few days ago.

I’d check the slip joint beside the transmission on the straight piece heading into the turbo, that kinda sounds like the area you’re saying you hear a leak.

Like I told another guy. Cart/horse, horse/cart-who cares? Sometimes you just want to see the nag and wagon hooked together! At least I have an idea on how it will look now. Of course, this is for a manual transmission.

Thanks wes...

Changing back into my oil soaked shirt and having another go with the inspection camera. On the up-pipe to cast turbo mount, the only thing I havent inspected is the side closest to the camera in the pic you sent. The slip joint is well sealed, as are the exh manifold connections.

If you look really hard at the pics I posted, it kinda looks like there might be some soot peeking out at the top of the 2nd photo

Captured the other side of that flange. This look like a leak? I’m getting only 4psi out of this turbo at 2600 rpm WOT

It's hard for me to tell for sure. the color isn't the best, but it sure does look like something odd. I can plainly see the darker color.
