Does it make a big difference with/without a nose cone mine has one but the older one replaced the first time never had one

In my personal experience, no. I’ve read others say that one type seems to be more forgiving of a damaged ring gear. I just don’t remember which one.

I have both types currently in service. The short(Denso) style works just fine. The longer (Mitsubishi) style... works the same way.
The shorter denso units(like the DB electrical link, and my cheapie) are a little lighter and much easier to get past the frame rail.

Also, as for starters looking identical, I currently have a 24V cummins starter, Denso style, and a Denso-style IDI starter in my living room. It's really hard to tell the difference - every dimension I can measure is the same(I haven't been able to get the cummins starter to work for me yet, though). The only difference is the position of where the motor is "around" the bolt pattern. And it does fit just fine.

So yeah, there are quite a few very similar(or identical) starters out there.

Just replaced my OE starter(with nose cone) with a gear reduction starter from O’Riellys (without nose cone)! Bolted right up with no problems, works like a dream, never knew that engine could crank that fast! My recommendation is new gear reduction starter!

And now I get to ask. I currently have the starter off the truck to do a replacement. It is a 1991 F250 IDI non -turbo auto trans. What year and model do I ask for to get a gear reduction starter?

I believe that you can just ask for one for a F Super Duty in the same year as yours. It should be the Nippondenso style starter. They were on every F Super Duty that I can remember seeing. In fact, we used to call them "Super Duty style starters".

Alright guys my old starter got stuck on me again so i just said a few bad words and went and bought an autozone mid price range with lifetime warranty.
So low and behold the old one was a gear reduction starter i hated swapping in a direct drive new starter but i must say man the new one aint no joke that damn thing moves. Truck fires up the immediately the key makes contact and then once its started you can hear the new starter decelerating in rpm.
Im leaning towards keeping the old gearreduction starter and getting it rebuilt and swapping it baxk in and just return the autozone job.

All idi starters are gear reduction........

Well the one i pulled off was offset and the new one is straight in shape so i was assuming the offest means gear reduction as described in the tech. article in this forum.

Weremn't the old Delco-Remy starters direct drive? That's why they're so heavy.
Possibly, but from what I remember, no. Lol
Just going off of memory though.
I cant recall if anyone has done a gear ratio reduction comparison between offset and inline.

I think it's one of those that the name stuck, even though it was wrong. Lol

I was looking for a real strong starter for my 7.3idi. The old 2.5kw starter had a hard time .... cold, hard totstart... hot, hard to start.
I found out our starters use SAE1 bolt pattern, 10/12 pinion pitch and 46-47mm from flange to pinion end.
Then there were more then "fits idi starters" to look for.
I wanted the largest reduktion starter i could find that fits the space.

LEECE NEVILLE m105601 seemed to fit. It is a 5kw planetary gear reduktion starter made for engines up to 9 liters.
I had to cut a litle in the ttb frame and to shorten the negative terminal but then it did fit.
It cranks insanely fast!
Coldest start so far was 0F , no problem.
Before hot starts could need execive cranking if the fuel in the pump got hot and thin. You know the cold water trick...
no need now.
It is not a easy bolt on starter, but if you dont mind some modification i can recomend it.
