Timing plays a big part but moosed IDI's do need an intercooler. It's not recommended to turn down the moose.

Timing will affect your EGT's. Too advanced, and you will notice a substantial increase in exhaust temperatures. However, I am not sure that retarded timing will increase EGT's. More will chime in about this subject. I believe you can remove the side plate on IP and turn it counterclockwise, one flat at a time to decrease fuel rates. I would get your engine timed before messing with the IP.
Also, do you have excessive black smoke?? This would be a clue that the IP needs to be turned down. Exhaust leaks can also cause a spike in EGT's too. Hope this helps you out.

Whoops didn't read the entire sig. Mel probably would not recommend messing with his IP settings lol.

I feel insulted that you would insinuate that I would even think of such a thing :backoff

No no no. Just trying to help you with you question. Your thread title does ask which way to turns down the IP.:dunno

Getting the IP times and an intercooler will be your biggest egt reduction efforts.

I can hit 1300* pretty easily ;Really

Might want to be careful hitting that. Heres a picture I took this summer when I worked at an Aluminum die casting plant. This is the temp setting that we keep our holding furnaces at.

retarded timing will give higher egt, advanced will give lower egt. This is diesel in general... when a turbo is added the results can be somewhat different.

retarded timing makes more exhaust heat, in turn spooling the turbo better. So retarded timing could make cooler temps also.
On the other end, advanced timing makes less exhaust heat, spooling the turbo less, so it could make higher egt.

As posted above about touching the fuel screw in the pump. To reduce the fuel you push the wrench towards the firewall to DECREASE the fuel. As many times as I have adjusted my fuel I went the wrong way once. I was trying to decrease the fuel because of black smoke. My test drive showed more black smoke and I thought about it for a few days. I was wondering why turning down my fuel would increase the smoke. Going over the direction in my head I got a lightening bolt.... I turned it the wrong way. So I opened it up once again and turned it down plenty. No more smoke and I'm happy. I hauled heavy with it set that way and what a low power hog I had. So you guessed it... I turned it up just a tiny bit... No smoke and more power.. I'ma happy guy again.... Even my daughter felt the lack luster power towing that day...

If the timing is significantly advanced/retarded it can cause EGT issues either way. On the trip up to Ron's Rally in Michigan this July..... I had no clue where my timing was at on the new Moose pump. I knew I erred on the side of advanced. EGT's, smoke were...... a bit of an issue even with the IC installed. Mel threw a meter on there and I was at 12+ degree BTDC. Opps...LOL Once it was set at roughly 9.5 degrees, the smoke was better (not gone, it's a Moose pump.... the Banks can only stuff so much air in there) and the EGT's were not an issue hauling the camper back to Kentucky. And, power was better as well. I used OD much more often on the haul home than on the trip up.

Timing and an IC will fix the problem I'm sure.
