I am going to check out a candidate for replacement engine tonight and the vendor is calling it a 1991 F250HD. I actually think it is a 92 because of the body style and I don't think he has the registration. he states it was last regi'd in another province and he has just used it around the yard for pulling stumps, etc. He must have looked at the door sticker because he did quote a build date of 10/91.

Regardless, is there an F250HD and a 'regular' F250. It is a reg cab 4x4, 7.3 IDI (I am assuming NA), 5 speed. Not sure what gears it has but that is irrelevant to my needs.

Thanks

Hd means it has a D50 in the front and a full floating rear axle. Standard dutys have a D44 and a semifloating rear axle

If it came from the factory with a diesel, it should be heavy duty. Not sure if this applies to the 83-86 diesels, though..........

I've seen a few light duty F-250 diesels with semi-floating axles before, but IIRC they were all '83 or '84 and weren't common even then. I could be wrong, but I don't think Ford bothered with a light-duty F-250 diesel after '84...

The HD typically denotes an 8600 GVWR truck. As was stated, F-250's with typically an I-6 gas engine had lower ratings and different axles, although still 8 lug. Most of the HD's were the diesels or had a gas 460.

My BIL has a RCLB with full floating rear and a 50 in the front. 5.8 under the hood. That said, the truck is pretty well cobbed together. I'll have to get the vin off of it some day.

and the semi-float 60 was only used for a couple years... 83-85 i think. And although its SF, still has very large wheel bearings, and much stronger shafts than the FF axle. 35spline vs 30. Nothing "light duty" about it, just lower carrying capacity due to SF vs FF.

My 86 regular cab longbed C6 4x4 had the full floating axle with the dana 44 ttb up front - kinda makes me wonder which was swapped?

The light duty had the semifloat rear axle and lower gvwr. If the rear axle doesn't have the huge hub sticking out its a light duty. I've seen one in my entire life and thats about it. They made them for quite sometime. Up intill the 2003 iirc. If you ever see a f250 in a f150 body you've seen them. It is now just the 8300gvwr package on the current f150 or 7700 and doesn't get a f250 badge. The diesels will not be light duties. And unlike someone said you could get a 300 i6 in a heavy duty f250, i have one.

One of my trucks has a semi-float 10.25, but I swapped it in the place of a full floater. Couldn't pass up a complete axle with the gears I wanted for $65, especially since I only commute. Even being semi-float, the bearings and axle shaft are very stout and sturdy.

Dunno on the rear but mine looks like a 44 from the hubs and parts in it...

Either way I'm surprised how well it took the past abuse:dunno;Sweet

Actually, as I understand it, Dana 44 front axles were standard equipment on regular cab F-250's up until '86, even HD's with full-floating rear axles. So, my guess is that neither axle was swapped on your truck...
