Tristan,
Hypermax told me only '83-'85 had head gasket issues. They also said my stock head bolts were fine. I run 12-13.5 psi with no problems.

Head gaskets got better on the later models, but the head bolts are still the wimpy 7/16s instead of the 1/2 bolts used on the 7.3. My head gaskets already seem to be weeping a little on the back sides of both of them. So I am trying to be careful for now.

so if i've got a pyro, it's pretty safe to turn up the IP on my near stock IDI a tad?

Yes, just keep a close eye on the pyro, no melting of pistons needed! My worry is if someone else happens to drive the truck who doesn't pay close attention...
