Got some time to work on it today. Of course, I had fuel to the fuel pump and it fired up after bleeding a bit. I went with debris clogging fuel line theory and pulled off the bed. Shower heads missing, but bits in the tank. Floats were OK, but senders are shot - Reading mega ohm values for all but empty. I think they read different submerged, but that's probably not a good sign. Fuel gauge is wonky, so gonna replace senders. I think I can get them at gas tank depot or bronco graveyard. I need to get the Diesel for 80 - 86 model which is harder to find. Put some primer on the frame while it was in front of me and cleaned 30 years of dirt and grime out of frame rails. Found a set of keys wired to the frame. Pretty cool trick, but now that things are cleaned up they are easier to see.
Wow that goose neck looks pretty darn scary. Huge cut out for the exhaust and very little weld surface.

Truck fired up without hesitation this morning. So that's great. No I can look at the steering. It pulled to the left (intermittently) last time I drove it.
I don't use the gooseneck. The truck came for Waterford, so I'm assuming they used it to haul horses. Judging by the welds and the cutout in the bed, I'm thinking he did it himself. Given it lasted this long, it's probably fine, I'll take a better look at it - thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the gas tank depot link. Ordered a couple senders. Now I just noticed I need the round plastic slot thing for the tailgate. Need to find one (or more than one) of those.

With the bed off, good time to install a 38 Gallon Rear Tank.

Did the Bed lifter work good for you?
One thing I noticed when lifting where the arms fit under the
Bed Lip, it made it flex up. I have some pieces of wood I put
under it. Like 2 x 3", butya know not that size after milled
down. See them where the 2 x 4`s are at HD.
Spreads out the load.

I just ordered a rear Sending Unit for my 86,
and 4 shower Heads.
Looks like a lot of the senders are out of stock for some years.

Oh crap. You're right. A little sketch. All the webbing is cut out almost directly across from each other to make room for the exhaust.. Good thing the top plate is 3/8.

Was thinking about the 38 gallon rear tank. But that would get rid of the spare tire (or at least I think it does). For now I'm gonna keep the 2 19 gallon tanks. I actually have the problem that if I fill it up, the fuel goes bad before I drive 400 miles or whatever I get from two full tanks. Mostly hauling stuff locally. 15 miles here, 25 miles there.

I just ordered some biobor JF you listed. Found a write up for fuel stabilizers by a woman with PHD in chemical engineering. Figured she probably knows something. She recommended that one for fuel that sits. She had a lot of others (diesel clean and other) that had other benefits, but she didn't call them out for long term storage. The good news is that it's a fraction of the price. That doesn't happen often.

Pretty amazing sometimes the hitches done on these trucks, before easy to install pre fab hitches were common.

Fuel gauge is wonky, so gonna replace senders.
If you're going to that trouble, check the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. Can't really remember - but I think there are other gauges which will not read right. Even after replacing my senders and that voltage regulator - the gauge shows empty at 1/3 of a tank... which is better than it was.

I had a bad lift pump - one of the bolts in the block was gone, so the lift pump only partially rode on the cam... and the motor still ran - but inconsistently as you describe. It's a cheap fix, aside from it being in an inconvenient location.

I did see the regulator mentioned in one of the linked write ups. Thanks for the heads up here. Going to check the gauges to see it it tracks the tanks, and replace the regulator if it's still having problems. Truck seems to be running better, but I'm not going to trust it till I get a couple test drives in.
