Timing

How do you go about getting a timing light and all the stuff for idi? Does anyone have one that they bought that is good? Can you rent them from some place? Any information would be appreciated.

please read the Timing Registry for details on who may rent timing meters. Most of the members here use the kent moore j33300 meters because they are a connect and play. the microprocessor does all the timing work for you. It breaks down a degree of timing to a 10th of a degree.

If your looking to buy timing instruments, get a good Digital timing light capable of at least 5000 RPM and a Ferret Quartz.

Yep that's right, if you look in the tech articles there's a write up on the procedure

Actually we can time a cold engine but... You need to pull the electronic timing advance wire off the top of the injection pump. Its the rear most wire and its the smaller spade connector. If you look closely at both wires on top of the pump you will see the different size connectors. this design is so we do not mix up the wires. Both will start the engine but using the advance wire feed on the front shutoff connector will not work once the engine is warmed up. The fast idel and electric advance are shut off when the engine is warmed up my the sender found behind the thermostat housing.
