I have to say, after driving it for about 10 miles, it is a whole new truck. It is so much more smooth and the power is much more noticeable and its much quieter. I dont have any issues hauling up a gradual hill, thing just feels like it has so much more power than it did previously.

I think my next mission is to get it properly or more accurately timed at least. Followed by installing this banks sidewinder kit that I salvaged off another IDI.

Awesome! Progress!!

Sounds like the cable binding up to me. They're actually on sale right now at Tasca Parts. I just ordered one for the 90 because it has a sticky spot in it. FYI I personally wouldn't bother with an aftermarket one after mine failed rather quickly.

But, I dont know where to get the tools to do it, not alot of IDI folks out here in CT

I'd try to meet up with @no mufflers

I'm sure he's a little bit of a drive, but he's the closest one I know of to you that has timing equipment.

I’m glad it’s doing so much better!! Once you get that sidewinder on you’ll be even happier with your beast!:)

I will definitely reach out to him.

Oh thats great, I will probably order that up. Yeah mine had actually shorted out on the glowplug relay posts when I first got the truck. The cover was missing from the GP relay and the cable was laying right on the power input and GP output studs, wore thru it's insulation jacket and fried a bunch of my electrical. ive been chasing those issues for years now but the cable got burned pretty good when it happened.

Hey you guys have been a big help, I really appreciate it.

WELP, the dang thing has been running great but just stranded me. Drove over to pickup a small tractor and truck wouldn't fire at all after picking it up. I got no smoke and zero sign of starting, not even a hiccup.

I am guessing that the IP having 160k on it is probably the culprit.

Is there a good tech article on timing? This sounds like my truck but sadly there’s no one offering timing in Michigan that I can tell :/

Or is anyone still doing timing rentals?

There were one or two guys who would do a timing rental, but I don't remember who. Maybe he will see this thread and respond.

@icanfixall was the person for it, but sadly it sounds like people weren’t respectful of their equipment so they’ve all but ended the program.

Has anyone ever taken one to the international dealer to get timed?

Good luck, most of them have already gotten rid of the tools to time these. You're more likely to find a garage with an old IDI tow truck and see if they have the equipment.
Thanks for this!! You totally jogged my memory, a shop in town uses a bullnose as their tow truck, I’ll have to stop by!

Check your fuel solenoid for voltage. It's the little terminal with the lock nut on top of the IP. If you lose power to that you'll get zero fuel through the IP

Might be too late for this to help, but if the engine was hot and wouldn't start after 20-40 mins you could have a classic hot-start problem. It's a sign of a dying IP for sure, but at least as a bandaid you can pour room-temp water over the head of the IP(right behind where the injector lines connect) and try again. This cools it off and condenses the internal tolerances. Should start right up if that's the failure point. Pour about 1/2 liter over and try it out. If it works always keep water in the cab!

It's caused by wear, makes the tolerances inside the pump too large at starting RPM to pump the required PSI. Another thing that helps is a killer starter where that thing really spins over like crazy.

Yeah I checked it by popping the spade terminal off and on and I can hear it engaging. I had replaced it a couple years ago because the solenoid cracked
