The next issue that needs resolved from the previous owner is the injector pump setting. Young fella owned it and was obsessed with rolling coal, and turned up the pump. Not a problem except he cant tell us how much he turned it up. Any once and done procedure to get back to original settings?

Ok I thought that might be the answer. How do I know if I adjust the pump to low, what might the indicators be?

If the pump is turned down so much that power suffers your hp and ability to tow normally will suffer. Plus no black smoke no matter how hard you drive it. Now no smoke means you MAY see a little when you lug it or push the throttle to the floor. But not a rolling coal deal like you kind of described now. When a diesel is working hard it will show some smoke. Just not sky blackening clouds of it.
The allen wrench you need to fit is the 5/32. I made my own by purchasing a single 5/32 from a neighboorhood snapon dealer. Then measured in what I felt was just long enough and hammered the cut piece into a 1/4 inch drive good socket. So now I have absolutly no allen wrench flex when adjusting the fuel screw. I use either a wratched or a breaker bar. One flat is just turning the allen wrench till one flat of it has moved. The wrench has 6 flats so you have moved the allen screw 1 6th of a full turn. Not much does plenty. Best way to know the adjusting allen screw is in the correct position is remove the yelom shaped from cover from the gear housing. Thats the 2 bolt cover then thin one. With the engine on thew timing mark of top dead center you will be on target or 180 out. With the cover removed the drive pin will be at the 4 o clock position. If its at the 11 o clock position its 180 degrees out and another full turn of the crank is required. Top dead center is the damper line in the middle of the timing tab short fat tube location.

This thing was a real smoker, I mean to the point of being what I consider to be a safety issue for anyone following closer than 1/4 mile. While the pump was out I turned it down 3 flats just needed to know the symptoms in case I went to far. We just had it out for a test ride and we still had more smoke than I remember my 6.9 having but not the billowing black cloud that obscured both lanes of the road behind you, and the truck seems to be very peppy, I think I will let the boy run it a bit and see.

lol kids.no care in the world and no idea where all that smoke goes and what it does to our home.sounds like your about 1.5 to 2 flats up too high still.you'll not see any smoke with an n/a when in proper tune and you wont lose any power burning clean either.they actually get more peppy, the cleaner they run.you'll know if you went too far because power will begin to fall.can't hurt a diesel by running lower fuel.no such thing as too lean like a gas engine.too rich like that kid had it sure did'nt do it any favors though.super high egts.you probably wouldn't want to see what the valves look like lol.

Yep that's what I was thinking 1 or 2 more flats as my 6.9 didn't smoke until you really put it under load and even then you could barely see it. Actually I did see the valves as we were doing head gaskets and surprisingly they were clean as was everything internal we exposed. Yes kids, they all have smoke rollers here and none of them probably need a truck to begin with, I know my son has no real need of an F250 diesel, he doesn't haul or tow a thing. Oh well we were all young once to.

where is timing set? Needs to be set before you fine tune the smoke.
