Stock fuel pump

will a stock 6.9 Fuel pump from the auto store supply enough fuel to my turbo'd, bored and (soon to have) moose pumped 6.9 to make it run good. i haven't seen anyone suggest any better pump. i don't want to go electric (less electrical the better) pump.

Well, my guess would be yes, it should flow enough to supply your truck with enough fuel. Though this is only a guess.

Most guys will run a holley red, more for convenience when changing fuel filters than because you need more fuel. I think the stocker will flow enough. Might want to ask Mel and his supplier that question. I believe that's what Ford used on the factory turbo IDI engines and they still used a mech. pump on the early power stroke engines.

Can't speak for the stock fuel pump, but the Holley Red will definitely handle it. I'd really encourage you to go electric on your project. It is SOoooo much better than the mechanical when it comes to playing around with the fuel system. Saves a lot of wear and tear on starters, batteries and glow plugs too.

The stock lift will work fine but..... An electric is the real way to go. It makes everything so much easier. I don'y know for sure but I've herd that most of the fuel getting to the injectors is returned to the tanks because the fuel is the injection pump lubricator and cooler fir it and the injectors. Maybe someone that knows more on this will chime in.

seesh, i was hoping the majority wouldn't point this way! well where can i get the electric pump, how much $$? and are they reliable, i like the simplicity of the mechanical, but if the electric will help i'll use it. is it a pusher (close to tank) or a puller (close to motor)? and i'm going to be running a Racor fuel filter/water seperator. i'm guessing i won't need one with the primer?

Always electric

Holley=pusher not very good puller and they can be rebuild, I use one for the last few years close to the tank as possible. You can also use any other 7psi pump You can get at part stores, I keep one in My tool box just in case.

For curiosity anybody know what stock lift pumps supposed to be rated at....pressure & vol? IIRC seems I saw posted once somewhere round 7psi., don't remember what vol is though.

Holly Reds are set round 7 psi aren't they? maybe not...???

do the electric fuel pumps need a anti-drainback valve? i was reading the summit book and under the Holley red fuel pump the list "additional items" and there's a anti drainback valve listed. i do't want to have to reprime the motor everytime i start it, or will it not drainback....?

I don't have a drain back device and have not experienced a problem.

You don't need it. The Holley Red will take a lot of abuse. They are simple and easy to work with. Will cost you around $100 and you can get them online or at any good auto parts store. They happen to push just around the right pressure for our trucks. The stockerr is in the 4-7psi range if its healthy. A healthy Holley Red is 7psi IIRC. You want the red and not the blue or black cause with those you need other gadgetry to control the fuel pressure and you don't want that. You also don't want the MR. Gasket cheapy pumps. I have found the purolator pump made by Fountain IIRC to be very tough and tolerant as well, but not in the same league with the Holley Red.

I bought the holley red for my truck a couple weeks ago, but have not installed it yet. JEGS has thier brand of electric fuel pump with same psi and gpm for $79. Looks like the same pump to me. If I had to guess it probaly is the same pump, Just has JEGS logo on it instead of holley. Lots of aftermarket parts are like that. Some more exspensive than other though.

ok i got a holley red pump. it was a best offer of $80 on ebay! came to $98 total with shipping. not too bad. just making sure i didn't see it was listed for diesel anywhere, the slightly extra thickness of the fuel won't wear it out right?

Nope... Diesel will make it live longer. Remember diesel is oil and not gasoline...

I currently run a Holley Red fuel pump. I placed my my pump in front of the changeover vavle. Will it not be able to pull fuel out of the rear tank when I switch tanks? The other truck had 2 tanks,but only one worked.
