The starter on 84 6.9l IDI (c6) is out, it will engage but will not turn the engine. It is very old (looks factory) and I think it is toasted. Can I use the Mitsubishi from My old 7.3l IDI (zf5).

That mitsubishi gear reduction starter will spin that engine so fast you will wonder why you kept the old starter for so long... A gear reduction starter is a wonderful upgrade to starting these rigs. Only bad side..... There is no bad side.....

I though the Mitsubishi starter is the giant log one, while the gear-reduction starter is made by Nippon-Denso?

I differ in that opinion. mitsu starters are easy to replace components rather than rebuild the whole thing. second, the ND top bolt is a straight up ***** to R&I. third, when the battery voltage drops, the ND will commit thermonuclear meltdown faster than the other two makes.
now that mitsu has come out with a unsupported nosecone bendix, I'm going to be installing that monster on the C6 trucks and see how the ring gear clash is tolerated

What you posted is true i would like to add to that, altho the mitsu is pretty much the strongest starter hands down the NP will spin the engine faster, BUT like towcat said if the voltage drops the NP will commit suicide very fast, but the Mitsu will take a while to kill, i would much rather have a mitsu than a NP and yes i have had both, never had one of the old DELCOs so i cant really testify on them
Well We pulled the very OLD starter and replaced the brushes then clean up all the contacts and lube the moving parts again, put it back and the thing actually turn the engine to the point of starting it so it stayed. I wanted the mitsubishi there but can argue with a starter that still wants to live. I still have the mitsubishi if the other starters fail.
