starter ?

What I know is basically on this thread, so your guess is as good as mine. All I did was go in, ask for a starter for my truck, and this is what they sold me. The starter came in a box with a leaflet explaining that even though it may not be an exact match to the old one, it is application correct since the manufacturer as well as rebuilders will replace them with later versions as time goes on and newer starters are placed in circulation.

In other words; don't scream at the guy behind the counter if it doesn't look the same as the core return

I suspect this starter or similar versions can be found in other trucks as well even beyond the ford/powerstroke family.

I am curious about the internals though. If it is still a gear reduction starter, then it must have some sort of planetary geartrain, no? That alone would be an improvement over the older version I had.

It is gear reduction alright - if you look at a pic of its front you'll notice the axis of the bendix and the axis of the electric motor are offset from each other, the only way that's doable is with some gears inside it. For that reason I do not think they are planetary gears, as those are all co-axial. What they are tho, I have no idea.

It would be amazing if you could yank that thing off and count the teeth so we would no for sure if its a psd starter
