I differ in that opinion. mitsu starters are easy to replace components rather than rebuild the whole thing. second, the ND top bolt is a straight up ***** to R&I. third, when the battery voltage drops, the ND will commit thermonuclear meltdown faster than the other two makes.

Hey Calvin, how would I go about identifying whether I have a Delco or a Mitsu starter in my truck?

now that mitsu has come out with a unsupported nosecone bendix, I'm going to be installing that monster on the C6 trucks and see how the ring gear clash is tolerated

What is the advantage of this starter, as compared to the regular Mitsu starter with the nose cone bearing?

Alright, well mine has the two long rods holding it together, so it must be a Mitsu starter then. And you guys say that's the best kind, cause it lasts when batteries get low? I can actually attest to that, as god knows how many times that has happened to me, yet the starter still keeps on spinning.

when you get a truck with a worn ring gear, the supported bendix starters tend to clash with the ring gear easier.
the ND starter has a better tolerance to worn ring gears. I'm hoping the new style mitsu will be just as tolerant.

David, that sure looks like my starter, which according to the pics posted by dyoung14 is a Mitsubishi gear-reduction starter - if you notice the real AC Delco direct-drive starter does not have the two long studs that run along the motor and holding the whole thing together.

Huh, I figured it was direct drive because I remembered it having a strait cylindrical case (other than the outside solenoid) instead of the offset that gear reduction starters usually have. Does it use a planetary geartrain?

that's the new style mitsu I've been talking about. there supposedly is a count difference in the bendix drive teeth that makes them incompatible with the IDI. here's the kicker, my alt/starter guy has been supplying me with the open nose starter for problem trucks. he may/may not be doing something special to it. i will have to check with him.

Funny thing is the other starter I had before this would often fail to catch once in a while making a horrible grinding noise during a hot engine restart (usually it only happened in public!!!!). This one has never failed to grab and crank every time.

The sound took some getting used to since cranking sounds like a japanese engine now

My mitsu fails to catch sometimes so a psd starter works on an idi i knew i reckonised that sound, it sounds exactly like a psd

12 teeth for the PSD. 13 teeth for the IDI.

David, so if I underst=and you correct you have a PSD starter in your truck then? From the looks of them the only difference between the IDI and the PSD ones is the nose section (supported vs. unsupported bendix), and apparently tooth count on the bendix gear. Also if trackspeeder is correct (which he probably is) then the smaller number of teeth on the PSD starter would make for more of a gear reduction with respect to the flexplate, which would theoretically make for less load on the starter and easier cranking... Does anyone see a flaw in this thought?
