So today while driving around running errands and getting some things for my truck, somebody decided to attempt to make a left hand turn in front of me while I was going through an intersection. I guess a bullnose Ford isn't very visible. Well, they failed, and I couldn't dodge em. Soooo KAPLOW goes a 3/4 ton diesel through a mazda. Well, fortunately it wasn't that bad, and Everyone was ok.

But, it snapped the pitman arm right off the steering box. Other than cosmetic damage on my hub and wheel, that is it. Basically, she drove right into my tire. I wish I would've gotten a better pic of their car, but they were already pretty irritated that I didn't get any serious damage. Plus, they told me they just left a shop, where they just had about $500 in work done on their car. Bummer. Should've been paying more attention.

Anyways, I'm going to the junkyard in the morning to go get me a replacement steering box. Are all the steering boxes the same for all the Ford trucks of this era? A buddy of mine said I should be able to get one from pretty much any Ford. Bronco, F-150, 250, 350. 2 wheel drive or 4x4. Is this true? Just want to make sure I get this beast back on the road tomorrow so I have it for Monday. Well, that is if everything else checks out ok. I'm guessing that if a sector shaft sheared, then the tie rod ends are probly not too happy either.

My parts book appears to show that F150-350 & full size bronco all share the same PS box, though it is a 85 book, so it may have changed in later years.

Yeah that's why I love having a big truck. They're safe. No airbags, but those just give you black eyes haha. I literally drove over the car. It was pretty crazy. Honestly the first accident I've ever been in. Thanks for the info jaluhn83. If Anyone else needs parts I'll be on the lookout

For what it's worth, E-Series vans (at least early 80's to 1991) used the same steering gearbox as the pickups/Bronco. So, if you go junkyard-hunting, that gives you one more group of vehicles to look at.

With that having been said, if you can swing it, the Redhead steering box is the way to go ;Sweet

Glad nobody was hurt!!

I would at least get a rebuilt on from the local store. All these boxes are pretty worn by now, and a rebuilt box has new seals and drives so much better than a old junkyard box. I want to say they are about $150.00. But you won't have a core, so that's $80 more.

I've been shopping steering boxes as well, and my research indicates Ford Ranger ones will fit. At least no later than 1997, which I assume means pre rack and pinion. I can't help but think they would be less worn out after having to turn substantially less truck. I would of course measure the bolt centers before I made a commitment.

Easier way to check compatability is to jump on an auto parts website like Rock Auto, find the part number for your truck, then see what other trucks have the same PN. In fact, a lot of times if you click the 'info' button next to the item on Rock Auto, they will have the info from the manufacturer that gives you cross references to other vehicles.

So, for example, on your truck the A1 Cardone steering box (assuming you have power steering) is 27-7516. According to the A1 Cardone website linked in the 'info' button from Rock Auto's website, this box fits everything listed here:

Some manufacturer's website are better than others with having this info, but Cardone is pretty good about it.

Glad you walked away, bud!

When I replaced my steering box I grabbed a unit from an f150 2wd with a 6cyl. Figured it's had an easy life. And it was tight.

Checking the book again, E150-350 does show the same part number, ranger/bronco-II does not. I cannot find a clear indication of what the difference is, however I would expect there could be some difference between the boxes for a 12,000 gvw truck and a 4,00 gvw one.

Also worth noting that an aftermarket application catalog may not always be reliable, and that it may also not exactly match the OEM - for some things they may have a blanket part that will replace a number of OEM parts functionally, but this doesn't mean the OEM parts were all the same. For instance, injectors - pretty much everyone rebuild a B or BB code and they will fit all idi engines, but this doesn't mean that all the various OE injector codes were the same.

Thanks for that info Mike! You're the man
My lug nut is missing because it was a wheel lock and I ditched those to avoid any issues since the 'key' was in bad shape. Even had to weld a nut to one of them because the key broke after the first 3.
I am definitely going to make the insurance claim for all steering components plus alignment. Maybe tires too since a little chunk is now missing from the bead area. Good ol BFG rim guard. Going to get a written quote on all of that today. Just hoping insurance won't hassle me since it's an old truck.

Ranger 2wd and 4wd steering box same as full size Bronco and 2wd and 4 wd F1/2/350 and Superduty.

Some vans but I just dont remember which so be careful some are back asswards turn left go right....I DO NOT RECOMMEND VAN BOXES BECAUSE OF THE ABOVE ISSUE.

Pitman arms are different but the common boxes I listed are all same.

This was confirmed through Hollander interchange when I worked in autowrecking.

Imagine selling ranger boxes as F350 4x boxes...for momoney lmao

Redhead way to go !!!
