I guess truck weight might have something to do with it, Towcat has a number of bigger trucks setup for work, and I have a dually with a HEAVY bed these big suckers just don't make as much difference, I would imagine the lighter the truck, the more it would hop. My truck is touching the factory overloads before I even put anything on it, My bed is made out of 3/16" plate

ride comfort from a 88-97 F450 doesn't happen. only when you're overloaded to 21k GVW does the ride become nice. I never had a tire cupping problem with my trucks or have I ever experienced anything that remotely resembled out of control bouncing. My F350 CC dually has blown out shocks but I don't have the oscillation problem either. In fact, "Spark and Fire" commented the truck rides like a caddy. Bottom line if do whatever makes sense to you. If it doesn't, don't do it. It's that simple

has anyone run an adjustable shock? i'm thinking of getting rancho rx9000's. i think those are the adjustable ones. my font end is bouncing and i really wanna get this truck riding well.
i've got the 5150 bilstiens on my trail truck. i got the ones with the heavy valving and they are not awesome. on the road i feel every little crack. offroad they work great. i guess the unevenness out there is enough to get them moving better?

After 20+ years of reading 4 wheel mags, this summary is what stands out in my mind.
The front shocks control the handling.
The rear shocks job is ride quality.
Keeping this in mind as you're driving, it seems to make sense. Go over a speed bump and the front gives you lesser of a jolt than the rear. Yoy can take the rear shocks off and go down the road. Ever try that without the front shocks? You'll be in a ditch. Coil sprung and torsion front ends amplify this ten fold.
I usually get 10 thousand miles out of monroes and then they feel the same as what I took off. If you like Ranchos, try the Explorer Pro Comps at 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers. I have compared them along side Ranchos on the same truck and they simply ride nicer. They are also way cheaper and you can catch a 4th shock free sale from time to time.

I've got adjustable Rancho's and like them. Mine are the older 5-setting, I think the newer ones have 9 settings (too many really). I adjust mine to 5 (firmest) when towing and on 2 when empty. I think I've had them on there for about 8 years.

i disagree.
the rear "jolts" more because the springs are super stiff.
of course the monroes feel new at 10k miles, they should last 6 times that long.
ever try taking the rear shocks off a softly sprung vehicle? it doesnt work.

Turns out I've had Gabriel shocks for the past 11 years (lifetime warranty) HOWEVER, Pep Boys no longer carries that brand so...they will be honoring my receipt/lifetime warranty and giving me the top of the line Monroe Sensa-Trac for a additional $25 each.

If they now make a sensa track to fit our trucks, you will be very happy with the way they ride. I have apair of those things on the rear of one of my cars and they ride VERY nice and handle well. They don't handle as well as bilsteins, but the ride is very comfortable, almost as good and quite a bit cheaper and they have a lot of sales if you time it buy 3 get 1 free. When I was shopping for shocks, I was considering getting some for my truck, but at the time, Monroe wasn't making a sensa track to fit the thing and I even contacted their tech folks to see in they could cross match one and no dice and I spent hours trying to cross reference one from measurements and specs and couldn't come up with a match, but came up empty, all they had was their heavy duty 2x4 smack in the tailside specials to fit these things so I got a set of Bilsteins and have not regretted it in the slightest, but if you can get the sensa tracks, you will be happy
If they give you the lifetime warranty deal on them as well, keep track of them because the sensa tracks do wear out and will need replacing, you will feel it when they start getting spongy on you.
