Anybody ever see a dual alternator setup for the serp belt system? Have an idit motor that will be going in my truck, and have been thinking about dual alts. At times It does a fair amount of winching, and though the 3g does awesome, it would be nice to split that load, or even just have the second as a backup.

Im sure you could find someone with an ambulance package that has dual alts, it may sacrifice the ac compressor, or use a proprietary bracket/belt.

Looks like the ambulance package in the late idi years was v belts and the big leece neville alt.
Was hoping there was something like the 7.3ps uses that put another 3g down low.
Putting it in place of the ac compressor is a good idea, but I like the ac in this truck.

I’ve off roaded my whole life and built 100s of road toys as a living. Mostly full sized rigs. After getting a 200+ amp alternator and wiring to handle it. The best thing you could do is a winch battery or 2 with isolation. You really didn’t want to be pulling directly from the alternator if at all possible. I’ve got after market A/c so I have a 3rd battery in the hvac area for the front with and a battery in the rear for a rear winch.

Isolated winch battery with a solar maintainer? Not sure if this is hacky by industry standards but it a simple and cheap

Actually on my over head chase rack I have solar panels for each set of battery’s. But I’m also the guy that plugs in my on board charger every night even with brand new batteries. But my truck is for emergencies so it needs to start every time

It is true, you only use the winch occasionally more than likely, and it needs short periods of high current. Another battery would probably fit the bill better than a 2nd alternator turning all the time unneeded. If you drive the truck a lot, the single alternator would have plenty of time to slowly fill the winch battery back up before the next use.
