REBUILDING A WIPER MOTOR

Has anyone rebuilt their own wiper-motor??

I have been checking on a replacement wiper-motor.

All I have seen are rebuilt, with a core charge or my old motor; and, they are not cheap.

When mine will not work, a few whacks with a hammer and it will run all day.

This behavior sort of tells me that the problem is more of an internal wiring issue, than a motor issue.

I am tempted to tear into mine and see if I can fix it.

I repaired the one on my 93 F150. I wouldn't call it rebuilt.

What happened with mine was that water had been infilltrating it for years. The bearings were out of grease, and one of the magnets that are glued to the case, let go. I cleaned the bearings, reglued the magnet to the case and put it back together. It has worked fine ever since.

i would give it a try, you dont have much to loose. if you can't fix it then cobble it back together enough to get the core for trade in. there really isent much to electric motors and the fact that it still works shows the windings are good. i think that is about the only part that an average person wouldent have a chance on repairing. the rest is simple bearings and electrical connections.

Well, I now know what the guts of a wiper-motor look like inside.

I removed the motor and dis-assembled it.

There are two rivets holding the terminal-block/brush-holder to one half of the metal plate.

They got ground off and replaced with small machine-screws, washers, and nuts.

There is also a ground on one motor-brush that is riveted.

It, too, gets ground off and replaced with a screw and nut.

I cleaned up the armature.

Also, there is a set of points that I cleaned; I am not sure what purpose these points have, but I think they play a part in the park function, as part of the points-mechanism rides inside of a rotating gear that has a lobe on it.

I also cleaned and lubricated the brushes, three of them, ground, slow, and fast.

I think my problem was caused by sticking brushes, as I found nothing else wrong, and a smart WHACK with a hammer would get things to going.

I brushed some more grease on all the moving parts and reassembled.

Then, I hooked a model-train power-pack to the appropriate terminals and gave it a test; everything worked smooth.

I put it all back together and gave the wipers a test.

They work better on a dry windshield than they used to in rain.

Another eighty bucks, or so, saved, at least for now.

Where could new brushes be bought, as they are about the only thing that can give trouble in these motors??
