How hard is it to rebuild a turbo?

I have aquired a Hypermax system and the turbo spins hard, so it will need to get rebuilt. I think the rebuild kit is under $100.00 but can a normal mechanic do this or does it take some specialty tools. I mean My dad is a TV repair man and he's got an awesome set of tools,... ;Sweet

Huff,..?

Thanks

Fast Time at Ridgmont High with Jeff Spicoli. Now I have to rent it. Anyway, when I was looking at rebuilding the ATS turbo that came with the van I was told to look at the turbine wheels for grind marks. If I saw any it ment that it was assembled and then balanced as a unit. Sadly, mine had the grind marks use for balancing and I ended up buying a new cartridge from Garrett. It was around $400.00 after shipping but it was brand new. Never could get the old one out of the ATS casting. The casting joint was worn so it make the job easier with all now parts. A good starting point on a used rig.
I think I remember some places that would rebuild and balance the unit for around $200.00 but that was a year ago. I hope I answered your question, now I have to go watch that movie.
Good luck,
Doug

a new cartridge should be about 300 bucks, I think the hypermax system is based on the same H trim to4b cartridge that the non wastegated ats is. Also how hard does it turn, are the wheels rubbing or no?

Hypermax is just a marketing name for truck specific turbo kits.

The actual turbo should be a Garrett.

The most economical thing to do is to take the turbo to a reliable turbo/injection shop and swap it in as a core for a new-rebuilt unit, or have a turbo specialist custom build the one you have with smaller exhaust housing and larger intake housing.

Turbo

I rebuilt 2 of my own, With no problem.
But for the cost I would recomend getting a rebuild cartrage.
I just went through, The kit was under $100.00 but if the back plate has a carbon seal, you are better off buying the back plate as a assembly. It was $ 125.00 then the Thrust hub dosent come in the kit, so thats extra.
How about the balancing factor and the shaft wear to make sure you dont need other trhan stock bearings. I have delt with Mike @ J&H Turbo in Mississippi # 1 800-826-5566.
I sent him my turbo and they rebuilt it balancing and all with next day shipping for $325.00. I had it back the same week.
Its not worth doing it your self to save a few $ and a possiable problem later.
Call him and give him youy Garrett # they have Cartrages in stock also.
Good luck
John

Thanks for the input guys, I will take a closer look at it in the next day or so, I may send ot yout to Ken's he said about $200.00 and he can rebuild it. Then I don't have to get my hands dirty.

Then the whole Hypermax system will be up for sale.

Thanks!

I, also, have an entire working Hypermax system that is on my recently removed 6.9.

I have had many inquiries and promises from people with big eyes and little pockets.

If you are close to Kentucky, I will let it go cheap for cash in hand.

No, I won't box it up and ship it; I don't need money bad enough for the hassles.

Big Van,

Be careful shopping for a used turbo kit for your rig. The Hypermax kit for a E series is totally different than one for a F series.

Thanks for the info Jim. I figured they are a little different and was hoping I could come up with or make parts that I'd need.

Midnight rider, I'm in PA so I don't think that counts as close. Thanks anyway.
