I'm in the process of a zf5 swap and just got the e4od down yesterday. I'm thinking now would be a good time to replace this seal. However, I changed my oil recently so I don't want to dump it just to do the seal. Can this seal be replaced without dumping oil everywhere? I don't know how high the oil level is in these truck.

Something you may be able to do is lift the rear of the truck up and put it on ramps (block the front wheels so it can't roll). If the oil level is at or slightly above the seal this should help keep the mess to a minimum.

Mel is correct. The oil level in the pan is below the crank. What seal are you planning it install. I would say to use the double lip seal because its a better seal. You will need a crank sleeve for this type of seal. Don't replace the seal without installing a sleeve. Usually the crank is worn enough that there is a groove in it. any attempt to install a seal without a speedi sleeve will create an oil leak. Also you can remove the seal plate from the rear of the block too. No gaskets are needed to the plate. We don't use a pan gasket so why use a gasket for the plate. I know gaskets are make for this but that isn't required. International never used a pan gasket. They used rtv without leaks. So rtv will not be a problem.
