My pyro's kind of gibbled. Sometimes it reads 450 ish
at idle, and sometimes it's down at about 300.
I know that this is the IDI forum, but
I placed this here for the exposure.

well most cases a malfunction is the cause of a bad connection between probe and wire or the wire is shorted against some metal some where

Bob,

Knowing how your truck is set up and having a pretty good idea that you're probably using all that the truck has to offer on occassion I would almost lay dollars to donuts that the probe is toast... I say this because I can bury my needle past 1500° when I want to and I have err... been told that others have been forced to replace mine errr.. I mean theirs because of this reason...

So order up a new probe and enjoy...

Then to effectively cure the problem please remove the add on mods and ship them my way for proper disposal - I would not offer this service to just anyone so you should feel honored... I'll be waiting by the mailbox for their arrival...

....and I am your new "Jim Jones" and still awaiting your title for your truck before you're allowed to cross into your new life.:D

Hmmm... I had to pick choice number 4 since your operating parameters are clearly incompatible with our experience. LOL I would have said it was a wiring problem.

So I am on the right track then. I was thinking
the probe as well. I heard/read somewhere they're
rated for 2000* and I'm pretty sure that I've gotten
close to that more than a few times. I'll check out
the connections first, since it seems to be a sometimes,
sometimes not, kind of a thing. A cheap fix either way.. :)

:rotflmao at Travis and Calvin. Thanks guys. :D :D :D

The sending unit produces a small electrical current that can be measured. A little research on the brand you have should produce some testing specs. Just blindly replacing parts can be quite expensive and may not produce a fix.

Thermocouples are thermocouples, brand names don't matter - he will either have a J or K type which in most diesel applications you will have a K type (higher temp range) unless he bought one for AFTER TURBO placement then most commonly it's a J type because of the lower temp readings. If Yellow and Red wires = K type and White and Red wires = J type - with Red being the NEGATIVE wire in both cases.

I'd vote for the probe. Mine did similar things after a dyno session and ******* the 1500 degree gauge for 7 seconds... IIRC, the Isspro unit was $12 or so from the truck shop.

Mines been pegged for longer then that, a few times.
Only because it takes me longer than that to get to
the end of the drag strip. Usually I don't let it get that hot.
Thanks again guys, I'll check over the connections first.

Go back inside, you doh doh. LOL
I can assure you that I'm in no hurry to start
peeling stuff off my truck so I can package it
up and mail it to your place. :rotflmao :rotflmao

Nice try though.

I do have a #100 plate you can try
if you'd like. You run a #10 normally don't you?
I'm not using it right now, so if you want to
try it out for a couple of months.......
I'm trying to track down a stock one so
I can grind a #10 out of it for myself.
This over aggressive zero plate I cut and am
running full forward is a bit much some times.
Makes for tons and tons of smoke though.
Comes in very handy for dealing with tailgaters. :rotflmao

I may know where a stock plate out of a 215 pump is. If you'd like I'll try and get it for you.

Mine would go screwy when I hit the brakes. Found chaffing on the yellow sheath and the braid section. Wrapped some tape around it and moved it away from the sharp edge no problems since. Been in there 3 yrs. Did have to replace the thermo coupler on my trans once though. What gauge and pyro do you have
