I finished the video about the valve covers if anyone wanted to see more of that.
Overall, not too bad. I do have a couple of things to say though. First and probably more importantly, unless someone put the wrong fastener in, there is no metric fasteners used in these engines. You can tell for sure that your valve cover bolts are SAE (1/2" heads). There are five lines/hash marks on the top of them. That tells you that they are both SAE and grade 8 bolts. The other thing is that you shouldn't have to remove those studs on the passenger's side to R&R the valve cover. Is it easier to do with them out of the way? probably, but I've never tried it.

I am working on getting a 1987 F250 with the 6.9 Diesel and a 4 speed up and around again, I drug it out of a hole and did the basics (batteries, filter, fluids, sca and what not) and she fired right up. Currently having some issues with fuel pressure at the filter head and will likely be doing a lift pump very soon. I have found this forum extremely helpful and wanted to start my own thread for helpful comments/advice and what not.

Here is a video of my truck.

Doesn’t surprise me she fired right up, these old girls just never quit!

This is the damaged fan, just removed it and will be looking at a wrecking yard one soon just wanted to take it down and make sure matches good. It doesn't look as bad as it is, there isn't any material missing so the out of balance effect on the water pump bearing would be minimal but it is still not good or something I will run.

Would you guys replace a fan clutch just because or is that a common maintenance item?

Captain,

1) I frequently hear folks saying theirs has worn out. So they do seem to wear out over time. Many say they feel some play in them when worn out.
2) Normally you can test them when its warm out to see if they start to lock up. But you just got the truck running and the fan is now off.
3) Two thoughts
a) If it’s in the budget buy a new one while it is off. Be done with it.
b) Get a fan and clutch at the junk yard. Yours or the junkyard clutch is likely to work.

Right, Fan Clutches do wear out over time, I don`t know how many years or miles. But actually it is how many rotations of the engine does it take to wear out one?

I have seen good one`s at the PNP yards on 6.9 7.3`s.
Most of the times they are already gone.

If that Fan Blade is damaged and you straightened it out, best to toss it. It will be out of balance.

I pulled a 7.3 in Oct out of a pretty tore up 89. Only damage to the engine was one bent blade. My BIL said to toss it, that it will be out of balance. He worked in industrial AC work for over 50 years, and learned that it is just not worth it.

Have you seen this thread on upgraded Fan?

Haha don't worry I would never rebend the thing like that some PO did that. I have only put a few test drive miles (about 35) on it since I bought the truck and I already ordered new wrecking yard fan.

It was only $60 for used metal fan I did see that thread and I would like one but the cost/risk just wasn't something I can do right now even though they look very nice

I just checked the local PNP
Fan w/o clutch...$14.49
Fan w/clutch $28.99...core $0.99
Clutch $17.99

Was that with or w/o Lube? :rotflmao

I know in Vancouver there is a PNP, and across the river in Portland are 3.

Of course Wa. is a big state.

Wow those are great prices! I think things are a touch more rare over here.

At some point someone put a big truck muffler in and ran 2.25 inch pipe out of it. It had 2.5 running into the muffler. I cut it off while working on something so now I am working on rigging up something slightly better, I would like larger but 2.5 is in the budget today. I am waiting on the glasspack to arrive in the mail. Also my new radiator fan got delayed in shipping.

Here's a peak of the new system, it's not very loud at all for a glasspack setup I was surprised. I will upload video later
