Over heating problems

My 86 6.9 has been getting really hot latley.well even in 0 degree weather in the winter it would stay kinda hot.it runs between the a & l on the temp guage.i really don't think it's stayin hot cause of the pump which is pretty well maxed out.i don't think that because in the winter when it would stay hot it had 2 diffrent pumps and they were barley turned up.no I don't have a pyro because well I ran out of money and dad just wants me to go by the temp guage and I really don't feel comfortable doin that.but I've just been drivin normal not pullin anything and it's been runnin that hot.i think it's the thermostat.what do y'all think?

Yeah, get a mechanical or even electrical coolant temperature gauge.
Factory gauge could be lying.

That's the thing.he won't get me one and I'm broke because it's to wet to cut hay.he don't like aftermarket guages

I really hope it's the thermostat some days it runs below normal an some it runs perfect then the last couple days it's been runnin got.i can't run the a/c or it will be way out of the normal and all the way to hot

The factory temp gauge is useless. They are famous for giving an inaccurate reading/fluctuating and there's no way to tell what the temperature actually is. C-[NORMAL]-H is not good enough for these engines.

The last water temp gauge I bought was somewhere around $15. If you do need a thermostat I'd get one from Rockauto.com. They have the Motorcraft t-stat for much cheaper than the dealer. Those are the only t-stat worth a crap it seems.

Our factory dash gauges really never tell us what the pressures or temps are. Ford felt if the temp or pressure was in the letters NORMAL then all was fine. But who knows what a letter means for temps or pressures. Aftermatket is the way to go for gauges. This is what makes me feel good driving heavy across the country.

Well when the guage is closer to hot you can feel that the engine is hotter.but I'll get after market somete.im gonna change tstats this week an see if that works

I definitely echo the sentiment to install an aftermarket gauge. That being said, the thermostat is always a likely culprit when it comes incorrect operating temps, or at least part of the equation. Remember to stick with a OEM unit.

If you search 'water temp gauge' on Summit Racing you can find several gauges to choose from for under $20. The sensor port is on the driver side head top/front under the alternator. Unthread original and replace with aftermarket. I have this exact one and it has worked flawlessly for many years. Easy installation too. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/equ-6232/overview/

If you were closer to Jacksonville, I would just give you one of my old spares that I have, and show you where to hook it up to. My factory gauge is a good indicator for me what temps I'm running, but I've been running a true temp gauge for a while now and know exactly what temp my engine is at just by looking at the factory gauge and knowing what the position corresponds to on my real gauge.

Oh, and get your engine timed. With as many injection pumps as you say you've been through recently, bad timing can mess a lot with your engine temps. Cpdenton has a timing meter over in Conway, but you'd have to make your way over to him because he gets really busy and wouldn't be able to make a trek up to Heber Springs. Otherwise, you can rent one, but that's getting into the money issue that you don't have.
