New guy with new problems

I'm happy to have found this forum, nice knowledgeable bunch of folks here.
I just bought 3rd diesel truck and 1st one that actually has any problems. It's a 1986 F350 dually with 6.9 banks turbo. Starts and runs good but white smoke never stops. Injectors, IP and GP's were recently changed, so after delving into it a bit more I found the culprit. The turbo is locked up solid. My question is can I run it this way? I bought it as a farm truck so it will probably not see any road use and rarely even get out of first gear.

Where in Arkansas are you? I wouldn't run it with the turbo on it locked up. Too many other things could go wrong. You can take all the banks turbo stuff off it and run the engine naturally aspirated. You could also get that turbo rebuilt if you want to spend the money.

Could I just "gut" the turbo and put a bolt in where the shaft was? I know that sounds like the typical "Arkie" fix, but I don't really want to spend a fortune on this truck.

Junking the turbo is simple remove it cap the oil return and other hoses and run a y pipe for exhaust and add an air filter...DONE!

You can likely sell off those turbo parts for $$$ to pay for a stock air filter and exhaust y pipe....

You want to take the turbo off, take it apart then stick a bolt in it and then reassemble it and install it? Sounds like a whole lot more work to me!

$$$ for a toasted turbo and some rusty exhaust parts?? I'm just trying to think "thrifty". Work here is almost non-existent lately. It is a bucket truck so it will be idling most of the time it is being used. Any harm in that the way it is?

Yes. The hot exhaust gas will cook whats left of the turbo ruining it for anyone else. Its best to remove it and simpley run the factory exhaust system. Both exhaust manifolds are not parts that have to be removed with the turbo. Look at the passenger side exhaust manifold dump end. That's where the exhaust manifold meets up with the factory exhaust pipes. It drops down and meets up in a "Y" from the drivers side exhaust manifold. Its a simple piece for any muffler shop to fabricate easily and cheaply. You can sell the complete not working turbo here and have enough cash to make the exhaust pipes and still have cash in your pocket. Any wrecking yard will have the factory intake air filter and housing. Please post some pics of the turbo. Many want spare parts for these turbos. I keep a complete spare Banks wastegated sidewinder turbo here just in case.

I have no idea how much the previous owner used it in this condition, so it might already be too far gone. When the weather clears and I can make a space for it in the barn I guess I'll tear it down and see what's salvageable.

The link woudn't work for me but I did manage to find it on CL. That is the exact sysrem I have and I,m not that far from Tulsa. Thanks, I'll check into it.
From what I've read, these old turbos didn't create much boost. Would it really be worth it to replace the turbo or should I just go N/A. Like I said this truck probably never see the highway.

Get the turbo rebuilt! These motors are much more enjoyable under any circumstance with a turbo.

and if you are going stock, i have air filter and other parts, and I have a new Y pipe .
