new coolant- shopping list

Hi Everyone,

I just installed a new thermostat and pulled my radiator, I am hoping to find a good place to rod out the tubes.

I have been doing searches on what coolant to run but am getting very confused on which coolant is ok to run, and which additives are compatible. I would love to be able to find a coolant that already has the SCA/DCA additive in it, so that I would only have to maintain the levels.

I have 2 options, Napa and a local International or Ford dealer; I would prefer to go with the International/Ford.

What would I need from International? Do they have a pre-charge coolant that they sell. Does ford have a pre-charge coolant that I can buy?

Any of these.....
Shell Diesel Ready, Peak Fleet Charge, International's Fleetrite (conventional pre-charged), Detroit's PowerCool, CAT Diesel Engine Anti-freeze Coolant, Arctic Blend HD Fully Formulated, Alliance pre-charged, Quaker State pre-charged, Penzoil pre-charged, etc. are some others. No SCA needed at initial fill, but you'll still need to test and maintain thereafter.

I choose to runCAT ELC coolant..."Extended Life Coolant"
Little $ at 9 bucks a gal but worth it!
FYI...Ford says NOT to use ELC type coolant so if you are not comfortable, just run some of the above choices.

Jerry: I have used John Deere Pre mixed coolant for years. If you are near to a JD dealer go check it out. It is green in color and has all of the additives to prevent liner pitting, etc. They have the concentrated as well, but I prefer to use the pre mix.

A good rule of thumb, is if it's Green, it's Clean. There are some other colors out there that have been used, but I like to keep things simple when I can. I always run a coolant filter, so I don't really worry about pre-mixed types.

Thanks for the good info. I ended up running the Internation brand of coolant and picking up some DCA4. I am going to be completely flushing the block and throwing in a new radiator. Exactly how much of the additive am I going to need to use. Thanks in advance.

I ran the Fleatgard with all the sca in it with distilled water. I ran it 35% coolant 65% water. When I had it timed once the shop looked into the radiator and asked why I was running window washer fluid for coolant because of the blue color. I told them because it looked cooler than green...
