MPG Question

How many miles can one expect to go on a whole tank of fuel. Im trying to figure out if Im getting decent mileage, it just seems like im forking over a lot of $$$$$ for fuel unlike my dually and the single cab I once had! I do know im talking different transmission and gear ratio. The past week and a half Ive dumped about $90 in fuel, sucked up both tanks and running on a refill of one tank which is down to 3/4 tank after going about 175 miles on 3/4 of a tank.

I want to check my timing but I can not find a dang place around here to check timing, well there is one but they do timing by ear! Anyone around Cincinnati have a timing meter they would let me borrow or we could meet up and I could pay you to time it for me.

So apparently something isnt good. I bet its my timing! Maybe thats also causing my hard starts. Which direction can I go to help out my mileage and help it fire off easier? I will do it by ear till I can find somewhere to get it timed.

I put 200 miles on front my tank. Half of which was loaded with 6K+

Sounds about like my fuel economy. I can drain the tank almost dry in 225-250 miles(19 gal) and typically see 12-14mpg with mostly in town and suburban driving. It gets better on the highway, usually 15-17. I know I'm probably paying a small fuel mileage penalty for using biodiesel which has about 10% lower BTUs/Unit than does D2. This could be from timing too far retarded, too far advanced or bad injectors or a worn IP. It seems like some of these trucks can run fine and never get quite the fuel economy others take for granted. I always assumed I'd be seeing 15 in town and 17-18 on the highway with a 4 speed and 3.55s but no such luck.

I am getting about 400 - 450 kilometers on my front tank...which is about 250 to 280 miles. This is all city driving, and all in direct...not overdrive. I have a 7.3, E4OD, D60 and 10.25 with 3.55's and stock 235/85R16's with a mild highway tread.

I'd say something is wrong....by my calculations you are getting about 13 - 14 MPG. I am getting about 17 - 18 MPG....I would look at timing, injectors, and a complete service....when was your oil last changed? What are you using for oil?

My f250 would get 16 around town with a stock fuel system at 272k miles it had 3:55s. My f350 gets 15 around with 4:10s and new ip. Hope this helps

I get around 19.2mpg. I see around 330 - 350 on my front tank @ 65. and around 300 miles on my rear tank, but i dont let it get much lower than a quarter before i refill. Not to much city driving up here. That is also loaded with 157gal of fuel. I just installed an intercooler so Im hoping to get a little better mileage on my trip. I have a 94 with factory turbo 5spd with 3.55s. Im turning round round 2050-2100rpms at 65. this mileage is also with a new IP pump that hasnt been touched, also with a new return kit. Im hoping to replace the injectors here soon.

My 89 costs about 50 a week. My last tank took 18 gallons and I made it about 320 miles. So that's a little over 17 mpg. That's doing 60. If i drive 85 i can drain the tank in 150 miles lol.

If it is relevant, I can get about 2 weeks out of ONE tank.....Once the rear tank is filled, I would fill up once a month or so...

On my 6.9 I had Id fill up the tank and be able to drive almost two weeks, with the dually about the same compared to this now.

Which way should I turn the IP?

passenger is advance. driver is retarted and a little goes an long way. i moved mine so slightly that you cant really tell it unless you stare at the marks and it made a big difference

My last road trip i needed a bigger bladder. the 19gal front with 18gal rear and 105 gal aux that i can pump while moving leads to around 2700 miles without refueling. Comes in handy when diesel is sometimes 20 to 30 cents cheaper in Reno than in California. With diesel being $2.80 a gallon it makes u feel a lil poor when u fill em from empty. Between 400 - 425$
