MPG Question

My NA must be setup right. I got 23mpg on the highway at 55mph. 437 miles on one tankful. That's with rest stops and a couple miles of city on each end of the trip. Tires, gears, acceleration, speed all play a part. Mine has 4.10's, I think it's one size up over factory tires, and you have to drive like an old lady. I figure I'd get 13mpg if I drove like a maniac and that trip would have cost what - $40 more than it did?

Mine will consistently deliver 20 MPG @ 70 MPH but short trips around down bring it as low as 13 MPG on some days. Generally I run the trip meter to 500 km (305.5 miles) on the front tank and 450 km (274.95 miles) on the rear and that allows a solid 10L (2.65 USG) safety net usually.

I've never run either tank dry on a hypermiling (55 MPH cruise speed) run but in theory, that would get me a range of 528 miles on 22 gallons of fuel assuming 24 MPG (tests returned 24.4 and 24.8 consecutively). It *might* be possible for my truck to reach 1000 miles on both tanks if conditions were perfect.

if youre gonna time it without a meter- there should be two alignment marks one on the IP one on the housing from the factory. when I timed mine (with a meter) mine ended up being about a dimes width (advanced) when done, from factory marks. I took a chisel before I even touched anything and made a mark of where it was. Like someone said before" timing can make a difference between a truck you love and a truck you hate" ( something like that.) But I could get about 14 out of it (c-6) 3.55. with the e4od and the 4.10 (which if you're not using they are killing your mileage) you are probably at what you can expect. mine was so far retarded I had to use a crowbar to twist the IP far enough to get it right.

Will I need to advance or retard it to see if it will help with starting and MPG.

Oh I dunno if this is relivent information but I can stomp my pedal going up a long hill and will not get any smoke.

With my old motor I always netted 14-15mpg around town, kept a log of it actually. I moved furniture out of state for a family member and netted 357 miles out of my front tank and 18 gal filled er up. Thats 19.8 mpg and I was estatic. This is with the Logger, you can see the specs in my signature.

my truck gets 13.4 mpg average, town and highway mixed, I'm sure with a new IP and properly timed pump I would get another 1 mpg, my truck is also timed by my ears haha

Mine has varied between 12 & 21 between different tankfuls, and the blue-gray smoke varies too. I think my injector pump is finally on its way out.

Still have not messed with my timing yet, been chasing down other little problems. With it being a long week and Im on vacation I plan on getting this done and re checking my fuel mileage. So which way should the IP be turned? Im not sure if I need to advance it or retard it to get better mileage.

Ive always thought that if you stomp the go pedal you can expect a little black smoke, but when I do it nothing at all comes out. Im not sure if thats telling me anything or not.

I'm thinking that hiring someone with a dyno and experience might be the best way to tune my truck. Peak power + no black smoke. Let us know if you figure out which way to turn the pump for mpg. Someone messed with my new one so much I don't know where to begin, if it was stock at least I'd know where I was starting from.

So far I have only been able to dream of 20mpg or higher from my truck!

My truck is a 4x4 long bed crew cab so that factors in I'm sure but I usually switch from the front to the rear tank @ 210 miles and that is just above 1/8 tank. My speedometer reads five miles and hour faster than I am actually going too so that doesn't help (or does help depending on how you look at it ). Last time I checked my mileage based off GPS I came in just below 16mpg on the freeway doing 65-70 the whole time...

I think my 3" exhaust is restricting it a bit--maybe I could squeeze out another mpg or two with 4" Anyway hope this helps.
