Hello experts,

1986 F250, 6.9 IDI, mostly factory config.

Got sudden no start condition which I diagnosed to likely shut off valve issue (my steps are below if you want long reading).

Without removing IP lid - there is 12 V on solenoid when key is on. Solenoid the resistance is about 4 Ohms. When I disconnect and connect red wire connector there is faint click.

Since it is likely the shut off solenoid isn't fully working after 40 years of service, which vendor is recommended to order shut off solenoid from ? To avoid common low quality part common these days.

Also, there are (factory?) seals on screws holding the lid (photo). Do I need to take note of something before breaking the seals on these three bolts ?

Thanks
Sergey

  • Two weeks ago started just fine, and drove about 10 minutes, no issues, parked.
  • Zzzz….
  • This week – no start. Suprise. Not even a single cylinder tries to fire.
  • Follow check list
  • Looking at exhaust tip while cranking – no grey / whitish smoke. Just clear air comes out
  • Both tanks have some fuel. Tried either fuel tank – no difference, no start
  • Batteries charged and connected jump starter
  • Removed Shrader valve and used mightyvac to pump out – fuel comes out easy but with bubbles. Pinched the return line and fuel comes out without air bubbles
  • Put Shrader valve back and measure pressure while cranking. Got 6 psi.
  • Loosen nut on injector on cylinder 6 fuel line and crank – no fuel splatter when cranking
  • Loosen nut on pipe from filter head to injector pump and crank – fuel comes out when cranking
  • Seems that fuel gets into injector pump but does not come out. Shut off valve solenoid issue ?
  • Check resistance on shut off valve. Got ~ 4 Ohms
  • Check voltage on connector to shut off solenoid. Reads 12 Volt on red wires when ignition is on
  • Connect fuel shut off solenoid connector back and measure current with ignition on. Got ~ 3 A
  • With key on disconnect and reconnect red wire connector – hear a faint click.

Those are just tamper marks to tell if the cover has been removed but not important unless your warranty is still in effect, but those ford 40+ year warranties will really hit you in the pocket book. If you do open the cover be sure to go read some of the tech articles on issues to watch for. If re-installed incorrectly it can cause a run away as it will hold the fuel shutoff opened and shutting off the key wont stop it at that point. It is not difficult but just be aware. Besides that I would guess that if it is clicking it is probably working as intended, the click isn't that loud when operating normally
