Looooong trip - any pointers?

Perhaps going on 300 mile each way trip. Pig running fine now, but wanted to know if there was any preventative recommended items to check over. Fluids are new. Actually now that I think of it, I have not done the diffs yet.

Also are there any spare parts I should take with me? Pig has 130k miles on it, and most of those miles were hauling the original owner's Chevelles around the East Coast.

Always, no matter where you are going, carry a spare fuel filter, belt, and some extra fluids. With 300 miles each way you should be fine though.

yea 300 miles isn't bad at all, also check to make sure the spare is good, dunno how many people I know have gotten flats on the road only to realize the spare is no good

This will be my first trip over 40 miles with this truck. I am scared, I will be alone. I hopefully will be towing my "new" TDI back with me.

Just did a 900 mile round trip w/mine and my son last month. Checked it out well. I had just done the valve cover gaskets and noticed some oil/fuel (?) on the mechanical fuel pump. I didn't have time to change it so I bought one ($27) to bring just in case.

Got back with no problems. Just a further love for this truck. I was very pleased at the way it handled a few hills and the mileage was good (16) considering a head wind for most of the way home.

I had so much fun, my daughter an I did a 340 mile trip (80-100 of it dirt or bad fire roads) to explore around the Colfax, Ca area on I-80. Did great there, too!

You should do good. Hope you have as much or more fun as I have in the last month.

highway miles are easier miles than the local stop and go ones. check over what was mentioned and you shoulb be just fine. in todays age with cell phones and such you are almost never really out of touch with help if needed.

Shoot 300 isnt nothing but across town. Fuel ,tires , oil, and water, carry some extra water and oil, just in case. Oh check the air filter, mine was nasty.

That is true in many parts of the country, but there are vast expanses where they are useless.

Even here in 3rd world Kentucky, there are entire counties where a cell-phone is useless.


I am sure Jred goes prepared , as most on here I think do; but, there is an ever-increasing mentality to, instead of being prepared and taking care of one's self, rely on calling someone else to take care of the problem.


Now, if one has broken a crank-shaft or wrung the eye out of the clutch, they really do need help and I will be the first one to head to the rescue and stay out all night if need be.

But, if one merely has a flat-tire, I figure they should be well capable of taking care of it and have everything they need right there with them.


We get a dozen cell-phone calls a day from stranded idiots that are too dumb to have a spare and far too lazy to bolt one on if they do have it.

As these people are travelling through and do not have a local phone-book, nor know anyone to call, what they do is dial 911 and police dispatch thinks they are doing us a favor by giving them our number.

I have more than I can do taking care of the customers already in the parking-lot, so I just refer them to the competition.

Very true Damon. My cell phone is spotty at best at my house, and I live less than 8 miles from town.

Like stated, oil, coolant, filters, a spare, and a good tool set.

i try to, heck i broke down for the first time at the kentucky rally, went to leave from the parking lot and the starter did nothing. no warning just up and died, might have just been a dead spot but hitting it didnt help. there i was sitting dead in the water with three kids in tow at the end of there day including a couple month old baby. fortunatly i was close to the campground and Heath (thanks again) came out and it didnt take but a little tug to get my warmed up engine pop started.

drove back to the camp and enjoyed the rest of my evening, the next morning i swapped my starter out from one i had behind the seat the whole trip. it was sitting beside the usual fluids filters and tools i pack every trip. i could have done it in the parking lot if i had to but either way all it cost me was time. i didnt get bent over by a towtruck or dealer anywhere.

Heck, that's nothing. I live in central IN, and I bought my truck in '09 in Jacksonville FL and drove it home.
