Inspection 26

My steadfast inspection mechanic at Stoner-Wade looked the Moose Truck over this morning for state inspection number 26. Given that there were less than 2000 miles on it since last time, it was easy to pass. We were remeniscing on how when he first started doing these, we had no wives, no kids, hair, no internet, polaroid cameras, no aches or pains, cassette tapes and records, a real president, and snow in the winter. Now that I have all new stickers, I need to get the windsheild replaced, and an intercooler on it by rally time.

Those are week before projects.

Still waiting on my stuffed air cooler too.

You probably thought that cause I've been talking about putting one in for 3 years or more.

Windsheild passes inspection, but broke at the 07' rally in Indiana when a gust of wind yanked my hood up from its partially open position. The hood can open all the way normally, but with the wind it over-traveled and the scoop smacked the bottom of the glass and shattered it. Just want to replace it cause I'm tired of looking at it. I'm going to take the old one out myself, and see if I can find a good glass man to put a new one in. I'd almost be willing to try it, but there are some things that I am not willing to experiment on or learn on, on the Moose Truck. I'll take pictures.

Around here. Getting a guy to come to the house and install a new windshield is realatively cheap. I'd get it done by a "professional" as well. Could you do it.......Yes. Will it be a PITA the 1st time.........Yes. Will it leak...........Maybe. You don't want is leaking...........not in your truck. Let the glass guy do it. It's so worth the money.

What intercooler are you using with the wide radiator on your '83?

around here about $200 bucks will get you a new windshield and a guy to come out and remove your old one and put the new one in about 30 minutes or less

$160 removed, new windshiel and installed, I wouldn't mess with taking one out for that, they do it cleaner and quicker than you can think about it! Mine was done in probably 30 minutes, and that counted talking to the guy when he got here, him loading and unloading new and old windshield, loading his tools back up, me cleaning the dash while it was out, etc.

Sound advice, but most of them seem to want the Lund Visor removed for the job, and I'm not going down that path. Took me a while to get it to not leak, so I'm not touching that part.

I've helped my buddy set several windshileds and can answer that for ya.

The windshield is suported by a couple of rubber stoppers at the base of the windshield molding. In order to get a proper set and not screw up the eurethane while installing, the stoppers also are used as a guide in keeping the windshield from moving around and compromising the seal.
When the eurethane is applied, it's in caulk form and applied properly, will create a 1" high ribbon that when the glass is set, it compresses to create adequate seal and hold.

It's almost next to impossible to set one with the visor on even with 2 people.

Yea. That's why I bought Butyle. Not sure if the problem is any better, but I'd like to find somebody who will try it. The insurance companies won't let them use Butyle anymore, so I'll have to find a glass tech who will work on the side.

Butyle is excellent. End of statement. Other than the misfortune of getting it on your hands, to which the only way to help the stickyness is to rub your hands into dirt, and wait for it to rub off from your hands some-odd weeks later.

Insurance companies have voided coverage for using butyle on glass in automobiles...Too soft they say and I have to agree. I've seen windshields pushed out with feet and they didn't break....The butyle was too soft...

if you can get the glass out, you can put it back in. i have installed several windshields in my time and its the removel that is the pain. go to your local paint shop and buy the 3m windshield roll and as long as you place it in the middle of the old seal that you removed, your good to go.
