I have a 91 f250 with a 7.3L IDI....65k original miles....runs great. In doing my homework on this truck...of course i stumbled upon cavitation articles and freaked. I checked the coolant with a hydrometer and had good freeze protection but the coolant was unlike anything ive seen before....yellowish gold in Color. There was a john deere keychain in it and i believe the previous owner may have use the cool gard john deere coolant....my question is....will the TEST STRIPS ive heard about tell me if i have the SCA protection against the cavitation issue? Or should i just flush the damn thimg and run something like fleet guard with added SCA? Forgive my inexperience....just trying to do my best to learn while protecting my new baby

The test strips would tell you that. It's what they were made for. If I remember right, Prestone is yellowish-gold in color. I've seen some "universal' antifreezes that were also this color. You may not have John Deere antifreeze in there. I'm just trying to give you other explanations.

My one fear was that seone may have thrown plain old motorcraft gold in there....this truck was well maintained. So probably not....but after staying up all night reading about cavitation ive gone paranoid

I looked it up. Cool guard II seems to be designed the same way fleetguard and the like are so IF IT IS the JD coolant the test strips definitely should tell you if it's good.

I did the same thing you did. Turned out I just had plain green coolant. I added a couple bottles of additive and got the levels up to where they should be and now I don't lose sleep over my coolant anymore!

I NEVER run anything the previous owner ran.
100% of all fluids get changed. even power steering fluid.
mainly for the fact that I know whats in there.
