Coolant .... the mystery continues

Their heavy duty coolant says "Free of Nitrites" yet has them listed on the SDS as less than 1% (typical control range is 2,000-2400ppm as sodium nitrite - 0.20%-0.024% of all other glycols). Their SDS Also lists the main ingredient as Ethlylene glycol at 80-85%. Maybe they add something that contracts as it heats up to conteract it? I am not familiar with the Ethylhexanoic acid listed on there.

I have no experience with it i can only go by the information they are providing on their website and SDS . Maybe someone from Evans can chime in about it

If someone wants to send me anonymous samples of Evans, as well as two other glycol samples (so we know its truly independent). Label them in a way only you know what they are, add food coloring, or whatever you want to change the color I will test all 3 for SCAs, glycol content, pH, aklalinity and to the best of my ability thermal expansion though it can be hard to show visually. I will need about 32 ounces of each.

2 Ethylhexanoic acid is the stuff in dexcool that caused it to eat lower intake manifold gaskets. It will eat any older type silicone rubber gaskets in the cooling system. Its also in most all makes all models coolants. My recommendation is to avoid any coolant that contains it.

Wow I am reading a lot thanks for challenging me on this. 2 Ethylhexanoic acid is an anti-corrosion additive according to WIKIPEDIA. It is in dexacool as previously stated. As coolants have moved away from silicates they have began adding other additives to compensate. There is a lot of speculation at to the culprit for the dexacool disaster, and 2 Ethylhexanoic acid is a suspect as it is known to soften plastic over time, and is a disaster for silicone, as I understand it.

I wanted to add, today i was a customer doing some testing oil a boiler and they happen to have a large commercial truck fleet. I asked them about water pump failures and the radiator composition etc. They prefer brass radiator because they can get more cores closer together but somehow it leaves more room between the fins so they dont clog with debris. That was interesting to me becuase adding brass adds copper to the cooling system. I asked about any aluminum water pump corrosion and he handed me a bottle and said other companies have seen lots of failures doing that but he has this and has never seen any water pump corrosion when replacing one. It's not on the bottle but its on the SDS. This additvive does contain azole. This is absolutely what will protects your aluminum from copper corrosion. Any coolant you use should have some form of azole added to it to protect the aluminum components (like your aluminum oil cooler directly next to the copper oil side cooling tubes).

It's called NAPA Kool 4056
