Always pleasant to hear about long uneventfull trips. Doesn't surprise me though. We tend to think of the newer vehicles like Superduties and Dodge RAMs and Chevy's and what not as being more reliable, probably because they are newer. But the realitiy is, these trucks were MORE reliable than these new trucks when THEY were new. There was less to go wrong, and the designs were not rushed into production. So if you re-new your truck, with factory parts wherever possible, and do proper maintanance, you have no reason to expect that they will not criss-cross the country as many times as you want them to.

As far as my engine/drivetrain's concerned, I have no problem with jumping in my truck and driving her across the country tomorrow...although I need to take care of the front suspension, and I don't think my boss would like it too much

Once you start down the road customizing everything, you cut reliability and create issues where mismatched parts have all been cobbled together.
I'm more than well aware of this. Even though my brownie was designed to handle a semi truck, I still designed my mounting setup for quick removal and always carry the stock driveshaft with me on long trips, just in case a problem pops up with my custom setup, that way I can pull it into any idiots shop and they can remove teh brownie, throw it up on the bed and re attach the stock shafts in well under 2 hours. I've taken that level of precaution for a simple extra box, What do you do when your entire drivetrain is modified with tons of possible failure points? Better bring a thick wallet when traveling

What a great trip! Yup, the IDI is a great road companion. My biggest worry when driving long trips like that is the tires and the other goof balls on the road with me........... NOT my drivetrain.

my F450 carrier has seen all the states west of the Mississippi multiple times and all the states south of the mason-dixon line at least once.
it's got 890k logbook miles to show for it.
Two motors, three transmissions and one cab replaced during that time.
my '92 CC dualie has 300k on it and seen multiple runs between kali and TX
even when something goes wrong in either truck, there's no feeling that "I'm sunk". It's more of an annoyance that the journey is delayed a little but not indefinitely prosponed.

I will expound on the virtues of long hauling the IDI. In the 16 months I daily drove it I put about 28K miles on it. It hauled many 10-15k loads for me and has gotten up lots of hay.I bought it on a thursday in south texas and drove it to virginia that weekend. It has always been a great road truck. It has about the smoothest drivetrain of anything I've ever driven. Lately I've been driving it more and more just because I enjoy it. It has also been a lifesaver on the farm. I won't be parting with it as long as I can keep it going.

I can sympathize completely! It's been over a month since I got back from my last trip, and I think I took about 1100 pictures, and haven't had time to go through more than a couple of them...

Reminds me of Rob and his cross country journey in the '86 crew cab from souther California to North East Ohio with over 300,000 on the clock. When I bought it from him, I drove it over 500 miles on my 1st trip in the truck! I was more concerned about getting lost ing OH than the truck giving me problems.
