how to read a vin

Hey guys, I'm trying to find out how to read a Dodge vin: ie
motor, cab style, trans, etc......

In that 10th number postion of the vin #, is there a way to tell the difference between a 04 and 04.5? I have seen the tag on the valve cover, for the "engine Family" numbers, and seen the Hp number, but lets say the tag ends up missing-----What did they do to ditinquish the 01 and 01.5???
just curious.
