Getting Hosed at Mechanic Shop

Well I'm a bit frustrated and need to vent a little. Monday morning I headed to work and stopped to get a coffee. When I got back to my truck, it was spewing coolant all over the place. I just got finished doing an injector job all weekend and was tired of working on it so I just got in it and drove it to work without even popping the hood. Well when I got to work I found out my water pump just let go.........wonderful. I know a brand new pump at auto parts store is around $70 and was so damn upset I didn't have time to fix it myself and had no choice to bring it to a reputable shop in town. Those are charging me almost $450 to do a complete water pump job on my truck. Am I going insane or is this incredibly high? Funny thing is the shop's name is "Affordable Auto". I don't think so.

Well.. In my humble oppinion thats robbery. Its at most a 1 1/2 hour job. Add a pump around $50.00 and your done. What else are they doing. Coolant and hoses... Maybe belts.... Sorry this is happening to you at this time. After the fan clutch nut loosening job the worst part of this job is the hoses. Seperating them from the differant places is tuff sometimes.

Well....$100 for water pump (they will mark up). Couple gallons of coolant marked up. Hopefully new hoses...marked up. And then a couple hours of labor and it sounds about right.

It's hard for me to justify that cost but that's what i get for having someone else do the job. I'm just too busy on the farm so that's where it ended up. I am not sure if they will replace hoses and belts. Awful rough on a college student's pocket book . Hopefully it won't need another one any time soon.

I hear you and totally understand the situation. It is a lot of mullah, and certainly seems like highway Robert. Just make sure they don't charge you for like 6 gallons of coolant, or am unusually long amount of time, ect.

IMO $450 does sound a little high. Whats the labor rate there? I'm $87/hr. So lets figure 2 hrs @ $87= $174.

A new WP is $75 from A-Zone and most shops are going to double that. WP$150

2 gallons of Diesel Spec coolant is $28

I get $352+tax. Maybe they are getting a pump from Ford? I'm sure that a new pump from Ford would run the price up, maybe $100 more?

They said the water pump was $107. Not sure if it is from the dealership or not. I will find out tomorrow when I pick her up. Something doesn't seem right but oh well.

i vote for sounds about right.....i bet you could talk to the service manager and get it down to $375+tax, which is near $400 OTD. Not bad if you ask me.....this is considering their point of view, not knowing what they might run into seeing an older truck roll into the bay.

I might ask if they would offer a student discount....since it's common here in chico. Heck maybe they will cut price in half

a reman pump cost me 75 in montana so if they are going new it will be a lot more, with the labor rates its about right.

Thats why I only work on my stuff. Did they put the proper SCA in the coolant? They list what its at in the RO?

me thinks that tin,,is a BIT undersized for what they are ****** him for..

Just be sure to ask them if the water pump came with two new top bolts, and if not, were they sure the bolts they used were compatable with the pump they got. By now, most of the reman pumps should all have the higher bosses, but if not... watch out!
