Fuel filter before Red pump

What is the best filter to use before the Red pump??

Looks kinda small... might get clogged up fast? Also does not specify diesel. I doubt that it would be an issue... but it is worth considering.

Why are you wanting a filter before the pump??? Any diesel going into the tanks is already filtered at the pumps in the filling stations. The red upmp has a screen in it also. Now if you are running some waste oil or cookong oil then you need a very good filter and a better pump. Otherwise don't run a filter before the red pump.

I run this one, and I wouldn't think of not running a pre-pump filter, but that's just me. I change the filter once a year and have only had one issue where I got a bad tank of fuel. It clogged a filter, I changed it and two minutes later I was off and running. Anyway, if you want a filter pre-pump, I can tell you this one works.

yea it even says in the holley red book use a quality pre filter. plus ya never know if any moisture got in your tank and little rust pieces are chewing up your $$ electric pump!

but yeah what is a good filter? shoot my i/p and injectors better last 300K, prefilter. racor 2 micron filter AND stock filter......

I use a detroit primary fuel filter. 30 micron and designed for the suction side.

I've never used on in any of my rigs, and never lost a pump. The pickup tube in the tank has a sock on it, and that's a very fine filter. Had a partial clog in the Moosestang due to WMO and had to drop the tank and pull the input tube and flush the sock. The Holley Red downstream never felt a thing. I think a pre-filter is a waste myself. The best filter is a clean tank, and quality filterered fuel going into it.

I use the sock on the pick-up as a filter too. But I also filter my fuel with a 5 micron filter.

I dont have a sock, just a big tube to the bottom . also that detroit filter is a hell of a lot cheaper than the idi one, especially when you have a case of them.

yeahhh....i'm using a scout 33 gallon tank, just has a tube in the bottom of the tank, no sock of anykind.

Sock? Every IDI tank I've pulled the sender from has had a plastic screen about 2 inches diameter, the 86, 87, and 94 were all the same. Could they have been replaced?

yes and no, it will catch the big stuff but really does not filter very finely. it would most likely catch anything before it got hung up on the pump screen but i would not trust it as your main filter.

i had one on a motorcycle that had rust in the tank. well long story short i was still cleaning rust out of the fuel bowls on a regular basis. granted it was fine silt rust but still junk got through.

yea i just want it to protect the pump like an "out of tank sock". got a big racor and the stock filter by the motor
