On my 90, the crate motor that the P.O. put in has a sticker on the valve cover that says 10.5 quarts. That is with the stock filter.
She takes it all in too.

I too have also heard the better filtration as well due to the tighter tolerances of the turbo.

Correct me if'n I wrong but I can't find the number for filter micron differences. cookoo

you might be able to find it here www.fleetfilter.com but I don't know if they give these ratings for oil filters or only fuel filters. You'll want to add the 9+ quarts in teh sump and 1-1.75 quarts in teh FL1995 and then check the dipstick with teh engine hot but on even ground when teh motor has had at least a 10-15 minute drainback time. Overfilling is not good, so don't add any oil until you are at or very close to teh add line, in fact with that big filter wait till its below the add line, that is 2 quarts low on a stock system but only 1 low on a PSD filter. Then add just one quart. Check the oil often. A healthy 6.9 can use as much as a quart per 400-500 miles,a dn a tired one can use it much much faster!

Sure seems like there is more than 2 inches difference, but I replaced a Puralator standard filter with a Wix 51734, so maybe there was.

The reason Ford went to this filter on the psd motors is because of the turbo needs. Yes, it does have a better finer filter media and holds more of it for better flow and filteration. Remember that the powerstroke motor uses the oil and the pump for the injection pressure. The psd heads have an oil rail that holds about 1 quart per head. And gee, sometimes the o-rings at the back of the heads on this same oil gallery let go and man-o-man do you have an oil leak. I think the pressure in this area starts low at 20,000 lbs and can go up to 34,000 lbs on a stock motor. I'm sure the psd guys boost this pressure way up there too. Just prefill the psd filter (1995) and run it. The worst thing it will do is work better for you. :D
