Anyone know what steel is used in stock F350 leaf springs?

Would it be 5160 alloy? :dunno

Thank you,
Rob

It should be 5160, perfect for bladesmithing... but I'd like to find out before I ruin a perfect set of stock leaves haha

I don't know what grade it is, but I DO know that it eats drill bits alive.
turn the drill bit----------R E A L slow--and use lube, and youll drill thru--the rockwell between the bit and spring aint much----unless its s super hard spring----

I just use Colbolt bits, and not worrie about it. (Or just puchase the colbolt bit size you need, 'cause they do cost.)

You're going to make a sword out of one?

LOL

Ask for a leaf from a bad pack. Don't ruin a good set - somebody may need it. ;Sweet

haha no just knives... one leaf can make about 30 or 40 knives, so I'd be cutting up a pack just for one leaf out of it. Right now I'm just using the overloads, but I'm afraid they will retain too much of the memory

As for somebody needing them, I've had them in and out of my sig line for the past 2 years and nobody has even asked about them, but yeah I'd rather get a leaf out of a cracked pack or something from a junkyard and let someone on here use my packs

I hate colbolt bits, I've never had good luck with them. Good old fashioned ones with cutting oil have worked far better and longer for me

The spring leaves break because of the spacers Ford uses between them to "soften" the ride. They create a shear point in the leaves.

When I rebuild the spring packs I remove the spacers.
