i am going to add an electric pump on the frame rail in a couple weeks. I have some questions. Do I just use a tubing cutter and cut a section out of the fuel line? If so, do I just slip the hose over the line and tighten the hose clamp? What size hose? Where to pull power from so it is off when ignition is off? The mechanical pump has 1300 miles on it. Can I leave it on, in line or have to at least disconnect the hoses? Is the Holly Red good and if so which one? Is there a better one for about the same price?

I kind of answered in another thread before seeing this one. If you want to run an electric pump full time, you need to bypass the mechanical pump on the side of the engine. What you need to do to the truck's fuel lines depends on where you're going to mount the electric pump. Some people mount them under the hood. In that case, all you'd have to do is to hook onto the factory steel line where the stock rubber hose attaches now. To mount it under the truck, along the frame, you'll have to splice into the truck's fuel line somewhere.

if you choose to mount in frame rail yes you can just use a tubing cutter and use rubber hose i believe 3/8"
i prefer to mount my fuel pumps under the hood i made a bracket to hang off my fuel filter housing and have has no issues running push pump under hood even though that's not technically correct

as for power i recommend a 4 post relay and 14 GA. wire (i used a Dakota digital 4 post relay off summit) wiring goes as follows
(86 ground) i just used a random ground wire i found by my starter solenoid
(30 battery power) i ran it off my glow plug solenoid since 6.9 has a direct battery cable going to it so i guess use the starter solenoid if 7.3
(87 this is output power that goes to your pump)
(85 key on/off signal wire) i got power for this from my ip shut off solenoid the one with 2 red wires just used a ring terminal and attached it to the post
id also try and not use those insulated butt connectors or terminals as they don't often give a good crimp and with wiring something as vital as a fuel pump id either solder or use non insulated terminals and connectors and heat shrink

as for your mech pump at minimum bypass it you don't want to be running 2 fuel pumps i prefer just to remove it and use a fuel pump block off plate for a big block Chevy everybody said it was direct fit put i had to shave off about 1/4" off the bottom so it would sit flat also you need shorter bolts for the block off plate id hate to see the day someone breaks off a bolt there
block off plates are commonly in stock at orilleys on the performance wall

hears some pics of my set up

If you decide to remove the mechanical pump and block it off the Mr Gasket brand plate will need a pinch of grinding but I'm pretty sure everyone who's used a different brand, Spectre I think, has had a good fit without modification. The Spectre plate worked fine for me anyways.
