Egine Stand placement

Ok guys,


Perhaps this should be a small tech article perhaps not.

I need to know where to setup the centerline of the engine stand as I am bringing my 7.3 turbo engine home this week and it's going on the stand for storage.

So any suggestions, pictures, etc are very greatly appreciated.

My personal experience with V style gasser engines is around the camshaft as centerline.

Please please help, I cannot afford to set this up incorrectly as I really only get one shot with the bobcat to unload it and the stand needs to be right on!

First, make Darn sure that the engine stand is not for a regular gasser.....otherwise you will be replacing tin work and possibly some concrete with a couple of toes.

if the IP is still on the block, it will be a little nose-heavy with the accessories

if it's a bare engine, centerline and mid point are going to be the mid weight of the mill.

You will be playing with approx 1100lbs dressed out.

If I am wrong, flame me but my neighbor tried doing it with a Kragen's engine stand and ended up busting up his garage floor and then having to replace the crank as the snout hit first.

I'd mount it so that the short block is balanced on the stand. Once you have the pan on, it'll stay right side up for the rest of your build anyway.

Oh and do not flip the motor over with the heads on if you have it mounted this way. As soon as it breaks over center, it will pick up speed. Don't ask how I know.

Ok neither answer are clear,

The engine is complete less accessory drives, and the actual turbo, it's coming from the wrecker as a complete core!

AKA heads on IP pump on pan on exhaust manifolds on

Stand I have is reasonably heavy duty four wheel stand for heavy engines.

I am outside on dirt, for tear down / inspection prior to decisions of machine work and parts replacement.

So I ask again.....

Where should I center the stand? Inline with the Crank? Inline with the Cam? Midway between Cam and Crank? Closer to Cam than Crank? Where?

Can anyone provide a clear simple answer?

I am aware of the weights involved, I am aware of not turning it over (which if centered correctly will not pick up speed) or it may whip around.

I just need to know the simple answer which is where? I would rather have it bottom end heavy myself from personal experience.

Gee argve, thanks thats a simple nuff answer for me. Sorry to rant there just wanted the KISS answer.

Not like I am not aware that a freakin 444 CI diesel is a tad more weighty than a 302CI gasser....

Mines been on my harbor freight stand (rated for 2000lbs) for almost a year and doing fine. I've got it centered just below the cam. Haven't tried turning it over yet, but I'll be using my hoist to help out!

I figured it out the hard way where to place them. Once it about flipped me over and I'm a big boy. That was the first time then we started to dial it in as future builds happened...

Thanks for the simpler responses. Not sure how many gassers I've done though it's gotta be upwards of 15 or there bouts, inline 4's n 6's, V6's n V8's though not a single diesel yet.

I am also lookin at a 18' runabout boat for 100 bucks, needs transom and floor redone, which being into glass for 10 years, is a cake walk for me.

I'll just buy the boat and store it. Its already got the engine removed part of the floor is out, some of the transom is out, I just have to complete the work.

Ya I'll take pictures n such as teardown of the Turbo proceeds. I am not certain it's going to get overhauled, I'll know more when it comes apart. The fellow aledges it was pushing oil past the turbo, though that may very well be the rings.

We shall see.

anybody have a suggestion for a heavy duty diesel engine stand. i'd never trust a harbor frieght stand with over $6K of motor hanging off it!!!! i'll $$$pay for a GOOD stand, and just return it when done if i need to. ;p i'd like to FULLY assemble it, accessories, turbo and all. any sugestions?

we had a AMC 360 tip off a cheesy 3 wheel stand and crush a valvecover and bend a valve. and we had a "heavy duty" stand hold up a IH 392 and we had to use a 4X4 block to support the crank pulley so the stand wasn't leaning down. i'm sure the 6.9 will be a tad heavier then the 392 but not by much. i'd rather have my own stand too so if it takes 6 months no one is looking for it.

That almost looks like the one i got? I'll try to get some more pictures of it when I pull my engine.

I used a speedway brand (Chuck Homier - same quality as Harbour Freight) and didn't have a problem - it was one of the ones that has four wheels not three.
