So how many differant gear ratios are available for a stock FACTORY Sterling differancial.. I have never really looked back there but I feel thats what I have. Right now its a set of 3.55 gears and in double overdrive at 85 mph I'm turning around 1850 rpm... I would like to change that to 2000 or 2100 rpm....:dunno:D

if i had a GV overdrive unit w/the E40D id have the best of both worlds.
the multiplied torque of low gears yet the rpms of stock in od.
id be looking for something like 4.56-5.13 or so probably.
she'd haul ass off the line and towing and go like a rapped ape up hill,yet cruise the interstate like a high geared gaddy lol.
what size tires ya running? and why in such as hurry to get there?

Hurry hell... I'm just keeping out of the way of the traffic here in Cali... Don't care to drop to lower gears but was wondering what ratios are available between 3.55 and 4.10.....:D

I'm only finding 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56.

My folks owned a '00 excursion that was special-ordered through the dealer with 4.30's, and it was tolerable with overdrive.

I think some 3.73 would be exactly what you are looking for. They should bump you up another couple hundred RPMs.

I'll straight up trade ya', I got 4.10's with a ZF-5 and at 65 I'm turnin' 2100 or so. I'm in the process of finding a doubleover drive unit though along with some 3.55's or 3.73's :sly

If your going to be doing any towing Gary, I would be looking at 4.10's. Your rpm range is way to low now for towing anything. Throw in the 4.10's and enjoy that double overdrive they way it should be. 3.73's will be to tall still imo.

+1 on the 4.10's.
i have 5.13's on the f450 and they are nasty obnoxious. the only thing good about them is being able to climb up the side of a building.

Well guys..... I have towed heavy with the 3.55 gears all over the US and Canada. Never really have had any issues with it but.... I do feel like 3.73 or 4.10 gears are in my future. I see some heavy 6 horse hauling in my future so a 4.10 setup is probably something I will need to look closely at..... That and converting to a dually.... Hopefully my mileage wont drop down to sub 10 mpg....:dunno

E4OD = 2.71 1.54 1.00 0.71

E40D w/gear vendors OD:

calculator:
http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

imho its pointless to have a GV behind the E40D unless you gear her down.
low gears = hauling power!
but with the double over = nice cruise speed also.
id have my cake and eat it too,if i had a GV behind my E40D.i wouldn't waste it with anything higher than 4.10's.:)

im getting 1793 RPM's @ 85mph with 235/85/16's and 3.55 gearing in double over.
are you sure your at 1850 rpm now at 85? or do you have something other than stock tires?

Right now its a set of #.55 gears and in double overdrive at 85 mph I'm turning around 1850 rpm... I would like to change that to 2000 or 2100 rpm....:dunno:D

if your running stock tires then im getting exactly what your after with a set of 4.10's;
2070 RPM @ 85 MPH in double over.

edit,
i just saw your recent thread.this could change things again.
if you plan on swapping to a dually.do you plan on running stock shorter 215/75/16's?

........
looks like id have myself a set of 5.13's with my short 225/75/16's if i had a GV.;)
id be cruising around in double over @ 45 MPH in the idi's peak torque range (around 1400+) and hitting the max fuel economy.:)
shoot,id go right to a set of 5.38's if i could find 'em.
ya don't wanna sell that do ya? :D

I am not sure I would trade my 4:10's right now, let alone with a brownie or GV overdrive. With the engine from high psi, I am right in the 15mpg around town range again. I should approach 20 mpg highway again and I have the tow ability 4.10's offer. Remember, the steeper gear takes strain off of the trans, drive shafts and such as well. Have you thought about PM'ing RLDSL and seeing what ratio's he uses and how he likes it? I think he has 4:10's and a .85od in the brownie.
