I'm thinking mine is taking a dump. I think it's the shift fork bushings.
Here's what happens. When I'm downshifting to slow down, I get a grinding. It does it in any gear. Say I'm taking off and then let off the pedal, it will grind. Only way to keep it from grinding is A: don't downshift, just come to a stop and start all over. B: Rev match to keep forward pressure on the gears.
If I'm already going fairly slow, it sometimes doesn't do it.
I'll probably go get another junkyard one. (What this one was, paid 75 it's lasted about 5 years) But I'm thinking of trying to fix this one also.
Any ideas?

I'll try to check it tonight. Last I checked it was over filled. I'm guessing the trans was somehow leaking into it.

The 94 powerstroke.
That isn't a model. But from your profile, it's an F350, correct? The 1356 used in the F350 has a PTO capability, and a second fill plug. It can take a lot more fluid than the one used in the F250. So it seems unlikely that it's overfilled.

Correct. It's not the original pto one though.
That one only worked in low range, so I sold it to a member for parts.
I'm really not even sure if this one was behind a diesel. When I walked into the yard it was already unbolted laying under the truck. I was so happy about that I just grabbed it and didn't even check the truck. Lol think it was a 250 though.

my very own hell
Input shaft seal is bad. To much fluid will destroy the transfer case very quickly.
He must have two bad seals then - the ZF has an output shaft seal, the space inside the tailshaft housing of the ZF should therefore be empty and dry all the time even if the BW input shaft seal is wonky.

Jasper, with the 1356s being what it is, I'd suggest you just pull the thing out and split it and see what you find. It's easy enough, and since this is not a Bronco you won't even have to fight stuck yokes during initial inspections.

+1; plus, since there's no "seals" in the tailhousing joints (IIRC there are paper gaskets), you'd expect ATF to be leaking externally between the tranny and TC, if the tranny output seal were leaking. The tailshaft space would basically have to flood with fluid before starting to feed it into the TC.

Im pretty certain, 2 of mine have been bad, easy fix. I buy from a place here in portland but pricing is the same. Tear it down first and make sure what you need, T cases are the same gass or diesel. f350's had the pto plate iirc. Same parts were bad it the one that had only low range. also the shift shaft gets loose in the case, shim it with a thin washer inside next to the shift comb, or do what I did and bore it for a bushing, but I have milling machine access.LOL
