Broken down in Banning, CA. Need #5 injector hard line.

#5 injector hard line started leaking terribly last night where it meets the IP. I checked the flare to make sure it was clean, etc. I can only assume that there is a crack I cannot see. Local dealer can get me one in 24 hours, but clearly, I'd like to find one today and get back on the road. I called two local salvage yards and no luck. No luck on CL either.

Also, I have another vehicle to get around in, so I can drive if necessary to pick one up.

Did a quick search on car-parts.com. Ajax Autoparts in Coachella (43 miles away) and Truck Parts Company in Baldwin Park (64 Miles way) have 7.3s in stock. Hillside Truck in Riverside (27 miles away) has a 6.9.

Do you have the line clamps on the hard lines. There are 2 clamps per side and must be there or the fuel pulse vibrations will break other lines. Off the 60 freeway in ontairo ca there is a pick n pull on milliken north of the freeway about 2 miles. Milliken is the first offramp west of the 15 freeway. They also have another yard on pyrite also north of the 60 freeway about 5 miles east of the 60 - 15 interchange. Any 6.9 or 7.3 number 5 cylinder hard line is the same.

the line clamps were on. just grabbed the 6.9 set from riverside. anything special i need to know other than swapping on the whole set bc they are slightly shorter?

basically, i'm asking if i need to swap in the whole 6.9 line set, or if i can get away with just one.

i'd be more worried about admission of dirt and other foreign matter into the injection system before I worry about unbalanced firing pulses. you can get home with a unbalanced motor, it will feel a little funny but you will go home. fix it right when you can make sure you can keep the area clean when opening up the lines.

true. it's not like the truck didn't have 3 different injector types in it before i changed them out, and it ran ok. i was kind of harsh on the number 5 one too, now that i think back about it. lesson learned.

Get some spray cleaner and flush out the replacement line. Before you remove any lines from the pump clean off everything well. Its got to be clean. Any dirt on that side of the injection pump has no filtering before it sees the injecters. Just make it clean as towcat posted. You really don't know your lines are 60 thoudands shorter either. That was done many years ago and those lines you just got might be the short or long lines. The 60 thous shorter lines wont be felt in the vibration either. I really can't comfirm that the lines were really shortened because the injecters were lifted 60 thous out of the precups for emmissions requirements. It has been said thats what happened but nobody has ever measured nor do I feel anyone can accurately mearure a line to see if its longer or shorter than 60 thous. Thats only 1/16 inch. Actually 1/16 is 0.0625 so 60 thou is less than a 1/16 inch by 2 1/2 thou. Brakeclean will wsh off all the dirt or engine cleaner that foams.

so, got it fixed. pain in my butt. took way longer than it should have. could do it again in an hour, but hope not to have to.

I broke the number 2 cylinder hard line because I left off the clamps thinking I knew more than the designers. Well that mistake cost me nearly $400.00 at the dealer about 13 years ago. That line is on the bottom of the injection pump and I had no idea how to reach it. Now I know there is a special tool and I still don't have one but I can now fix that problem with any of the lines. I'm a big boy now and no longer wear diapers. Funny how we start out and end in diapers isn't it... What I did about those short bolts in the clamps is I replaced them with 3/4 inch long bolts. Then tape the nut to a box end wrench. Slide it under the clamp and push the bolt thru it. If you had a thrid hand you could hold the clamp closed tight but we don't. So I use a very small pair of long nose vice grips. Any cheapass pair will do for this job or buy a nice snapon pair and be proud as a puppy with two petters.

Just thought I'd give everyone an update on my, now completed, trip.

Replaced the broken line, and truck ran well the rest of the trip. Mis-balance noticeable at idle, but not so much any other time.

Lost an inner dual near Junction, TX the next day. Good thing I signed up for Coachnet. It's an old U-Haul truck if I never mentioned that.

Later that night, my fuel pressure gauge decided to come apart, so round two of things that cover your engine bay in diesel. 10 minute fix though.

After that, last 4 days of the trip were completely problem free.
